Tennyson Whitted was a four-year member of the Roadrunner men’s basketball program from 1999 to 2003. As captain in his senior year, Whitted led the team to the best season ever in the history of the program at Ramapo. In 2002-2003, the Roadrunners climbed all the way to the NCAA “Elite Eight”, breaking many school records along the way. The team set a new all-time school record for wins (24), previously held by the 1991 “Final Four” team. They also broke the all-time school record for win streak (11) set by the same team. Ramapo posted 17 straight wins and recorded the best conference and overall records in the school’s history going 26-4 overall, 17-1 in NJAC play. The Roadrunners were the first to ever clinch 1st place in the conference for basketball. Whitted, a three-time NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, was the first player in school history to score over 1,000 points and dish out more than 900 assists in a career. For his efforts that year, he was also tabbed as a NJAC 1st Team All-Conference member, leading the team in assists with 262, and steals with 117. In his first three years with the team, Whitted was awarded NJAC Defensive Player of the Year Honors on two more occasions and led the team, and the nation, in assists and steals. The team’s Coach’s Award recipient of 2000-2001, and Most Valuable Player of 2001-2002, Whitted dished out a game high 17 assists twice in 2001-2002, beating his old record of 16 from the previous season. Whitted shot a solid 88% from the free throw line and 46% from the floor that same year. He recorded 148 total rebounds and 318 points netting his 1,000th career point vs. Montclair State in the NJAC Finals on February 28, 2003. Whitted helped lead Ramapo to their first ever ECAC Metro Championship Crown with a 101-83 victory over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City and only their second appearance in the program’s history in the Division III NCAA “Elite Eight”. During his career he was named to the NJAC All-Conference 1st Team, ECAC All-Star 1st Team, and NCAA All-Sectional “Elite Eight” Team. He currently resides in Linden.
