When Juan Arroyo started a club program at Ramapo years ago, he had no thought of being a Hall of Famer. With a handful of dedicated tennis players, Juan Arroyo began a program with Professor Anthony LaManna as the club advisor. Then Athletic Director Bob Hartman said that if the club maintained activity for three years, it could become a varsity sport.

For a club program to become a varsity sport there are several milestones that are passed on the way. Juan recalls that his team beat their first NJAC varsity opponent, then Trenton State College. With the victory he thought, “we arrived… we made it.”

Prior to Ramapo, Juan played tennis at North Bergen high school. As a collegiate tennis player, among his personal highlights he includes winning the Conference championship where he won every match (singles and doubles) on the way to the title.

Some time after having graduated from Ramapo, he became the coach of the team he had started, while working in the College’s Admissions office, coaching for four seasons. He compiled a record of 42 victories and 7 defeats, the most wins as a tennis coach.

He is currently employed as the Assistant Director of Academic Career Planning and Placement at New Jersey City University.

He lives with his wife in Union, NJ.
