ROADRUNNERS FALL JUST SHORT, 5-4 IN OVERTIME

Owings Mills, MD:  Caitlin Grimes scored her second goal of the game 4:25 into overtime as Elizabethtown College earned a see-saw 5-4 victory over Ramapo College Sunday morning at the Black Eyed Susan field hockey tournament hosted by Stevenson University.

With Ramapo keeper Rebecca Elliot on the ground after saving a shot by Nadine Yunginger, Grimes knocked home the rebound to give the Blue Jays (1-1 overall) the victory over the Roadrunners (1-1 overall).

Maureen Town also scored a pair of goals in the win for Elizabethtown, while Katie Bruno finished with a hat trick for Ramapo as the teams combined for 38 shots and 17 penalty corners in the match.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the contest as Liz DeMatteis scored her third goal in two games by redirecting a shot from Julie Foster. The Roadrunners tied the score at 1-1 at 15:51 when Bruno capped a flurry of shots with her second goal of the year, but the Blue Jays went back ahead 2-1 at 19:35 as a shot by Ali Cavanaugh was deflected in by Grimes for her first goal of the season.

Town pushed the Blue Jay lead to 3-1 at 28:38 following a pass from DeMatteis, but Bruno pulled Ramapo within 3-2 at 31:28 by steering home a shot by Rachel Wintermute. The Roadrunners came out with back-to-back goals in the second half to take a 4-3 lead, as Jayne Manigrasso scored the equalizer with 28:29 to play then assisted on the hat trick goal by Bruno three minutes later.

The Blue Jays forced overtime with 23:24 to play when Town took a pass from Yunginger and netted her second goal of the afternoon, just over two minutes after Bruno's go-ahead tally. Elizabethtown outshot Ramapo 5-2 over the final 23 minutes, including a final chance by Yunginger with 41 seconds to play, but could not find the winning tally.

Elizabethtown posted a 20-18 advantage in shots over Ramapo and held a slim 9-8 edge in penalty corners. Elliot made 12 saves in goal for the Roadrunners, while Lindy Hamp played the first half and the overtime period and made eight stops for the Blue Jays.
