Panama City, FL: The Ramapo College softball team split on their final day at the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic falling to Emerson College, 6-5 in eight innings while defeating Wisconsin University-Eau Claire, 3-2.
Against Emerson, Ramapo scored in the top of the first inning when junior
Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ) doubled home junior
Brittney McKeon (Toms River, NJ) who reached on a double with one out to take a 1-0 lead. Emerson tied the game on a RBI single before the Roadrunners took back the lead in the fourth inning. Junior
Stephanie Malgeri (Montville, NJ) singled to center before moving to second on a ground out. Sophomore
Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) ripped a double to left center plating Malgeri to take a 2-1 lead.
Emerson added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on four hits with one Ramapo error to take a 3-2 lead before Ramapo tacked one run on in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning Wong smacked a double to left field followed by
Danielle Rothenberger's (Livingston, NJ) RBI single to right field tying the game at three.
In the top of the seventh inning, with bases loaded and one out Rothenberger singled to left field scoring
Deanna Russomanno (Cranford, NJ) who re-entered the game after pinch hitter rookie
Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, NY) walked to lead off the inning and McKeon who singled earlier in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Emerson came right back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh as they scored two runs on three hits. In the eighth inning, using the international tie-breaker rule, Ramapo started with a runner on second base with no outs. They would load the bases with one out and could not score a run leaving three Roadrunners on base. In the bottom half of the inning Emerson would sacrifice bunt the winning run to third base and with the infield pulled in Sierra Wood would hit a single of the short stop's head to plate the winning run, 6-5.
Junior
Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ) picked up the loss as she struck out 11 and walked only one.
In game two against Wisconsin University Eau-Claire, junior
Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ) struck out 12 allowing only five hits over seven innings of work.
Eau-Claire scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning when a Ramapo error allowed the runner on third to score, she reached on a triple earlier in the inning. The Roadrunners tied the game when Wong ripped a double to right field to lead off the bottom of the third inning and she advanced to third on a single to left field by sophomore
Maggie Scarpelli (Wyckoff, NJ). Wong scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by junior
Stephanie Malgeri.
Eau-Claire took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI double before Ramapo came back and won the game in the bottom half of the inning. With one out rookie
Amanda Kent (Sparta, NJ) singled to center field before Wong cracked a double to right center field, putting runners on second and third. Rothenberger then hit a hard ground ball to the short stop as the Eau-Claire defense threw the ball home and the ball was misplayed by the catcher allowing both runners to score on the play.
Malgeri was 3-5 with one run scored and one RBI while Wong went 4-7 with three runs scored and three doubles and one RBI during the two games.
Ramapo returns to action on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games when they play Springfield College at 1:00 PM and Anderson University (IN) at 3:00 PM.
