Pomona, NJ: The #19 ranked Stockton University softball team won a pair of NJAC games today over visiting Ramapo College. The Ospreys battled in an eight-inning game to prevail, 5-4, before they took game two in run-rule five innings, 10-2. The Ospreys move to 26-6 overall and 12-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners drop to 25-10 overall and 9-5 in the league.
Game #1: Stockton 5, Ramapo 4 | eight innings
Ramapo struck early with two runs in the first inning. Clay'le Correa-Vanness drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a ground out and then stole third base. Correa-Vanness later scored on an infield error by the Ospreys before
Hannah Hensler drove in
Kori Gargiulo with an RBI double, 2-0. Casey Sokol laced a single to center field which allowed Maggie Formichelli to score, cutting the Ramapo lead in half, 2-1. Stockton would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double from Alexa Panagopoylos for the 2-2 score. The Ospreys went up 3-2 in the fifth as Panagopoylos drove in the team's third run of the game with another double as Caitlin Cetrulo scored. In the top of the sixth,
Madison Groschel-Klein ripped a single to center field and moved to second on
Lia Milsom's sac bunt.
Alex Hastings drove in the game-tying run with a hard-hit single to center field which allowed Groschel-Klein to score, 3-3. Both teams would hold the other from scoring in the seventh sending the game into the eighth. In the top of the eighth, Groschel-Klein started on second base before Milsom put down a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Correa-Vanness reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases before Hastings lifted a sac fly to left field to plate Groschel-Klein, 4-3. The Ospreys induced back-to-back infield pop outs to end the Roadrunner threat. Stockton would tie the game with an RBI single from McKenna George before Emily Clauss laced a two-out single to the left-center field gap allowing the game-winning run to score for the 5-4 victory.
Brooke Knight (12-4 overall) suffered the loss in relief for the Roadrunners. Knight struck out three, walked three and let up seven hits and three runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings of work.
Gabby Morgan let up six hits and two runs in the first three innings in the circle. Hastings led the team at the plate finishing 2-4 with two RBI. Hensler,
Aimee Notaro and Milsom each collected two hits for the Roadrunners.
Game #2: Stockton 12, Ramapo 2 | five innings
Stockton scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead. The Ospreys added two in the second and five more in the third aided by two Stockton players hitting home runs. Ramapo got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Hensler drew a walk to lead off the inning and later scored on Groschel-Klein's RBI single.
Emily Ehrmann singled and later scored on an RBI ground out from Milsom for the team's second run. The Ospreys held the Roadrunners in the fifth to hold onto the eight-run NJAC victory, 10-2.
Mikayla McJilton (5-3 overall) took the loss in the circle for the Roadrunners. She surrendered five hits and five runs (three earned). Morgan worked four innings of relief with one strikeout while she let up nine hits and seven runs.
Casey Sokol (8-2 overall) held Ramapo to just three hits in five innings of work to earn the win for the Ospreys. She struck out three, walked five and let up two runs.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday when they host Montclair State University in NJAC action beginning at 3:30 PM.
