Madison, NJ: Drew field hockey won a thrilling game with Ramapo, 2-1, at Ranger Stadium.
A pair of outstanding plays, Elizabeth Law's goal with two minutes and Lauren Fasano's save in the final seconds, secured the big non-conference victory. Nicole DiBattista tied the game for the Rangers
after
Victoria Ahlers (Freehold, NJ) got the Roadrunners on the board early in the game.
Amanda Ferry (Gloucester City, NJ) in goal for Ramapo, made 11 saves to keep her team in the game despite the hefty advantage in shots and corners by the Rangers. On a restart after a Drew injury, the Roadrunners stormed down the field with Raimondi carrying to the endline. The junior whipped a cross back towards Ahlers to who ripped a shot on the first touch, her fifth goal of the season.
The Rangers got it back in the 10th minute of play. Drew won a corner after a flurry of shots; Nicole DiBattista took the insert which Melissa Kistle stopped perfectly for Elizabeth Law to crash towards goal.
Though Ferry blocked Law's initial effort, DiBattista was right on the rebound to power home from close range. Meghan Howlett had a chance to put the Rangers up in the 20th minute. The sophomore flew through the Ramapo defense to get alone on goal between two Roadrunner defenders. Ferry came up big again by stonewalling Howlett.
Drew kept pouring forward, getting all the opportunities over the next 15 minutes. DiBattista fired wide off a corner and Howlett had another chance that got blocked. The Rangers ended the half well up in both
shots (11-6) and corners (7-3), but even on the only stat that counts-1-1 on goals.
Deep in a second half full of action, but with few clear opportunities, Law won it with a terrific goal. The Rangers had twice been denied by defensive saves, from
Jayne Manigrasso (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) and
Viktoria Kristbergs (Forked River, NJ) as well as four more saves from Ferry, before Law's winner.
Samantha Calabrese picked up a loose ball just outside the Roadrunner circle before feeding Mary Esposito on the right hand side. Esposito controlled then made a move to the outside and slide a pass back to Law eight meters out. Law turned on her defender to find open space near the endline; though seemingly at an impossible angle, she found a waist high spot just between the keeper's pad and the front post for the game winner.
The hard work was not over yet. Ramapo got the ball back to midfield in a hurry and restarted on the attack. In the final seconds of play, Fasano was called upon to make her biggest save of the game. A Roadrunner tossed in a long pass from well outside the crease that ricocheted off the post. Raimondi gathered it around eight meters away from goal and lifted it towards the upper, far corner of the net. Fasano, down low to cover her net, sprung up, back peddled a step or two and swatted the ball to safety. The horn rang seconds later on a nice win for the Rangers.
With the win Drew improves to 6-3 on the season and 5-1 at home. The Roadrunners fall to 3-5 overall. The Rangers are on the road next as they travel to face Goucher on Saturday. The Roadrunners return to action on the road when they face NJAC rival Kean University at 1:00 PM.
