ROADRUNNERS DROP TOUGH, 5-4 GAME IN OT

Purchase, NY:  Junior Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) scored in dramatic fashion with 8:28 remaining in the first overtime, propelling the Manhattanville Valiants field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Ramapo College at GoValiants.com Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Alyssa Coughlan (Rye, N.Y.) got the Valiants on the board quickly in the 2nd minute on a shot from five yards away, which scurried passed Roadrunners goalie Megan Tierney.

Ramapo tied the contest in the 14th minute, when forward Katie Bruno entered the game as a substitute and took a shot from within the crease that deflected off a Manhattanville defender and into the net.

The Roadrunners took their first lead of the afternoon when Amanda Mavrakers scored her first goal of the season in front of the net on a scramble.

The Valiants continued to pressure the ball, tying the contest at two in the 20th minute off a penalty corner taken by freshman Kayla Meenan (Warminster, N.Y.). Meenan's pass went through defenders and found the stick of senior Maura Bruen (Brewster, N.Y.), who took a snapshot from the top of the circle.

With the Roadrunners pressuring the ball in Manhattanville's zone for over 10 minutes, the Valiants got a breakout play between Ascencio, Meenan and Coughlan. Ascencio went through defenders and fanned on her shot but it went to the stick of Coughlan for her second of the contest.

Ramapo outplayed the Valiants in the half taking more shots, 6-4, and penalty corners, 6-2. Sophomore goalie Danielle Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) made four saves as her counterpart Tierney made one save on four shots on goal.

To start the second half, Ramapo changed goalies replacing Tierney with Rebecca Elliot.

The Roadrunners tied the contest in the 43rd minute as Aimee Herbert scored her first goal of the season, as Herbert crashed the net after a scramble with defenders.

The Valiants were desperate to take the lead in the middle of the second half and keep the upper hand on Ramapo, who finished with 20 penalty corners. Coughlan gave Manhattanville the lead once again in the 44th minute, as she celebrated her birthday in style by scoring her third goal of the contest after receiving a pass from Ascencio.

Ramapo got two great chances to re-tie the score in the second half, as the Roadrunners were awarded a pair of penalty strokes. In the 44th minute, Megan Boise stepped to the penalty spot and took a shot that went wide right of Scicutella. Five minutes later, the Roadrunners were granted another penalty stroke, and this time leading scorer Jayne Manigrasso missed the net to the right side of Scicutella.

However, the Roadrunners battled back and knotted the score at four on Manigrasso's slapshot from 15 yards away that beat Scicutella in the 54th minute.

In overtime, Manhattanville and Ramapo had great chances, but it was Ascencio's game-winning goal on a two on one breakout with Meenan that sealed the deal for the Valiants.

Ramapo outmatched the Valiants throughout the contest in shots, 17-6, and corners, 20-2, but Scicutella came up big with 12 saves to earn the victory for Manhattanville.
