ROADRUNNERS FALL TO DIVISION II ADELPHI, 3-2 IN OT

Garden City, N.Y. - The Ramapo College field hockey team fell in overtime to the Panthers of Adelphi University on the road.  With the win, Adelphi moves to 2-2 while Ramapo drops to 2-5.

The Panthers took control early on as they scored less than two minutes into the game. Freshman Julianne Gerbino picked up a deflected shot and beat Roadrunner goalie, Megan Tierney (Wayne, NJ), for the early 1-0 lead. Adelphi continued to put the pressure on Ramapo as they came out of a corner by freshman Crystal Gray who set up Gerbino for a shot on goal. Tierney made a nice save, but the rebound was picked up by freshman Jeanette Heimerle who slipped it into the net to put the Panthers up 2-0 with just under 16:30 left to play in the first half.

Ramapo responded with their first goal with just under seven minutes to go when sophomore Kimberly Raimondi (Ridgewood, NJ) found the back of the net to cut the lead in half. The Panthers held the one goal advantage heading into the second half.

The score remained knotted at 2-1 despite the Panthers out shooting their opponents six to three. With just under 8:00 to go, Ramapo struck with a goal from junior Amanda Mavarakes (Wayne, NJ) to tie the game at two. With time running down, both teams had opportunities to score but could not capitalize as the game would head into overtime.

The Panthers had two quick shots at the start of bonus field hockey by Heimerle but could not connect with the back of the net. Freshman goalie Jacqueline Grant denied a potential Ramapo goal with a diving save to keep the game alive. The Panthers had their opportunity to end the game on a breakaway started by Gray. She passed the ball up to Gerbino who ran down the sideline into the Roadrunner arch and passed it to Heimerle who put the game away with her second goal of the game.

Grant made six saves on the day for the Panthers, while Tierney made eight for Ramapo.

The Roadrunners return to action when they host Drew University on September 30th at 4:00 PM.
