Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College field hockey team dropped a tough 5-2 decision today in their 2008 season opener to the Monarchs of King's College. King's opens up the 2008 year at 1-0 overall while the Roadrunners stand at 0-1.
Ramapo's sophomore forward,
Jessica Todoroff (East Brunswick, NJ) opened up the game's scoring in the 6th minute off a penalty corner, before Debbie Wychock (Wilkes-Barre, PA) netted back-to-back goals at 10:24 and 11:19 giving King's a 2-1 edge over Ramapo.
Senior
Ashley Zimmerman (North Plainfield, NJ) tied the game at two goals apiece on a second penalty corner with 15 minutes left to play in the half; the score stood until intermission.
In the second half, Wychock struck again dishing a ball to rookie Jenera Quinones (Wilkes-Barre, PA) putting King's ahead, 3-2. Wychock scored her third goal of the game, King's fourth, at 54:23, unassisted, and rookie Shawna Walp (Levittown, PA) scored one of her own at 61:47 to put King's ahead 5-2.
Net minder Erin McGinley (Kingston, PA) blocked three shots, including a penalty stroke, in the final 35 minutes, keeping King's ahead of Ramapo for the 5-2, three goal victory. In the first half, Michelle Ray (Lumberton, NJ) made no saves with both Ramapo goals against.
Ramapo recorded seven shots to King's 14 while
Erin Quigley (Pompton Lakes, NJ),
Megan Tierney (Wayne, NJ), and
Kristine Adams (Pemberton, NJ) combined for seven saves in the game.
The Roadrunners take on Castleton State College tomorrow at noon in a non-conference match-up at the Athletic Center.
