Mahwah , NJ: It took The College of New Jersey's field hockey team 84 minutes and 33 seconds to get past the Roadrunners of Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior forward Colleen Stamler (Stockholm , NJ /Vernon Township ) put in a loose ball into the lower right corner for her eighth tally of the season and the game-winning goal.
Ranked 10th in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Coaches poll, TCNJ improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. In their first season of conference play, the Roadrunners drop to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The first half drew to a close as a scoreless tie despite the fact that the Lions outshot Ramapo, 14-0, and 11 of those shots were on goal. TCNJ had a chance to go up 1-0 at 8:06 when the team was awarded a penalty stroke. However, the Roadrunners' sophomore netminder Katelyn Ferguson (Sussex , NJ/High Point Regional) stopped the shot and the score remained 0-0. Ferguson had 11 saves in the first stanza.
The Lions racked up 30 shots for the game but needed overtime to put it past Ferguson . Ramapo was held shotless but the Roadrunner defense kept TCNJ at bay in regulation and the majority of the first overtime period. The Lions boasted a 26-0 advantage on penalty for the contest.
JuniorKristina Beyel ( Long Valley , NJ /West Morris Central) registered her third shutout of 2004 as Beyel had no need to make a save. Ferguson had a strong effort in the cage and finished with 20 saves in the loss.
Head coach Sharon Pfluger needs just one more win to garner her 350th TCNJ career victory as Pfluger currently boasts a record of 349-39-5 in her 20th season of coaching the Lions. In 21 years of coaching, she owns an overall mark of 358-58-9 after accruing a 4-8-3 mark at Kean College in 1983 and a 5-11-1 record at Montclair State College in 1984.
The Lions will be back in action on September 26 when TCNJ travels to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham for a non-conference game at 1:00 . Ramapo will host Wilkes University on September 25 at 1:00 .
