Box Score Jersey City, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team defeated New Jersey City University today on the road, 6-3 in game one. The second game was called due to rain and will now be played on Thursday, April 24th at 4pm in Jersey City.
With the victory the Roadrunners now stand at 15-15 overall and 7-8 in the NJAC, while the Gothic Knights fall to 5-28 overall, 1-14 in the conference.
In the top of the first inning, sophomore
Danielle Saporito drove in the Roadrunners first run of the game with a single center field, scoring on the hit was junior
Kim LaPenta, taking a 1-0 lead. La Penta doubled to left field earlier in the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, a fielder's choice from sophomore
Melanie Walling allowed rookie
Taylor May to cross home plate, extending their lead, 2-0. NJCU scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning before Ramapo broke open the game in the top of the seventh. Following one out in the top of the seventh, LaPenta and sophomore
Mikayla Melendez each singled before sophomore
Melanie Walling belted a three-run home run to take a, 5-1 lead, her first of the year. Rookie
Nicole Hernandez picked up an RBI with a sac fly to left field, allowing Saporito to score, 6-1.
NJCU did not surrender quietly in the bottom of the seventh as they scored two runs. Casey Perez and Marisa Bariso each collected RBI's to come within three, 6-3, before senior pitcher
Nicole Schneider induced a strike out to end the game.
Schneider (8-5) went the distance for Ramapo in the circle. She struck out five, walked two and surrendered seven hits. LaPenta and Saporito each collected two hits a piece in the game while Walling drove in four RBI.
The Roadrunners will play their final regularly scheduled home double header tomorrow afternoon against Hunter College at 3pm.
