SOFTBALL SWEEPS TCNJ, 6-2 & 14-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Ewing, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept NJAC rival the College of New Jersey today, 6-2 in game one and 14-1 in a five-inning run rule game two.

The Roadrunners now stand at 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC while the Lions fall to 6-14 overall, 0-4 in the conference. Ramapo last swept TCNJ on March 29th, 2008.

In game one, Ramapo got on the board in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Melanie Walling smacked a double to right-center field allowing Mikayla Melendez to come around to score. Melendez walked prior to Walling's RBI double.

The Roadrunners would score five runs in the top of the second inning. Erin Witherspoon led off the 5th inning with a double before she scored on Harley Masiello's double. Nicole Hernandez beat out a bunt single before Taylor May knocked in Masiello with an RBI single to left field. Jaclyn Lima would load the bases with a bunt single of her own before Melendez was hit by a pitch, allowing Hernandez to touch home plate. Danielle Saporito drove home May and Lima with a single to left field, 6-0.

TCNJ scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Jessica Kennick homered to lead off the fourth before she drove in the second run for the Lions in the fifth inning with and RBI ground-out, 6-2.

Masiello and the Ramapo defense close the game out in the sixth and seventh innings, not allowing the Lions to cross home plate, coming away with the 6-2 win. Masiello (3-6) went the distance for the Roadrunners, striking out one, walking one and scattering nine hits.

In game two, the Roadrunners pounded out 16 hits en route to a, 14-1, five-inning game. Ramapo scored two runs in the second inning. With two outs, Melissa Moreno ripped a single to center field scoring Walling from third base, 1-0. Lima then singled home Masiello, the eventual game winning run, with a single to center field, 2-0.

In the third inning, Ramapo scored six runs, all with two outs, to take an 8-0 lead. Kim LaPenta highlighted the inning with a bases loaded double that allowed Moreno, May and Lima to score. In the fourth inning, the Roadrunner added five runs on four hits, taking a 13-0 lead.

TCNJ got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, 13-1. Deanna Utter knocked in Kennick with a sac fly to left field.

Ramapo added one more run in the top of the fifth inning as Walling scored on a infield ground out by Grace Brennan, 14-1. Ramapo held the Lions in the bottom of the fifth inning for the win. Starting pitcher, Nicole Schneider, improved to 4-1. She struck out four and walked none while only giving up three hits.

LaPenta led the team in game two, as she went 2-4 with five RBI. Lima knocked in three of her own and scored one as she went 2-3. Masiello was perfect at the plate, 3-3, with two runs scored and Hernandez finished 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Moreno was 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while May finished game two going 2-3 with two runs scored.

The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon at home when they take on Brooklyn College in a non-conference doubleheader at 3pm.
