RAMAPO SWEEPS RUTGERS-NEWARK IN NJAC SOFTBALL ACTION

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark this afternoon at the Athletic Center, 10-2 in game one and 11-5 in game two.

With the sweep the Roadrunners improve to 13-14 overall, 5-7 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 12-20 overall, 1-11 in the conference.

Ramapo took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Erin Witherspoon singled to lead off the inning and later came home on a squeeze bunt from Taylor May. Witherspood slid under the tag at home plate, 1-0, before Kim LaPenta ripped a double to center field, plating Harley Masiello and May, 3-0.

Rutgers-Newark came back with two runs in the third inning to come within one, 3-2, before Ramapo scored seven run on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Melanie Walling and a bases loaded triple from Witherspoon, 10-3.

Harley Masiello and the Ramapo defense worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning coming away with the victory. Masiello (6-8) fired a complete game, she scattered five hits and struck out two.

LaPenta was perfect at the plate (3-3) with one run scored and three RBI while Witherspoon was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Ramapo belted out ten hits in the game including four extra base hits.

In game two, Ramapo took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Mikayla Melendez knocked home May with an RBI single to left field before Danielle Saporito drove home Walling and Melendez with a double to right center field.

The Scarlet Raiders scored two runs in the fifth inning before Ramapo added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, 5-3. With two outs, Nicole Hernandez drove a single up the middle to score, Melendez and LaPenta.

Rutgers-Newark scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at five all. Liane Drastal drove home pinch runner Sadie Logozio with a sac fly before Kelsey Lucas singled home pinch runner Shirley Abbelard. Lucas later scored on a wild pitch, 5-5.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ramapo came back with six runs on seven hits to take a, 11-5. May led off the inning with a single and went all the way to third on a wild pitch before Lima drove her home with the eventual game winning run, 6-5. Meledez, Walling, Melissa Moreno all collected RBI singles in the inning before May ripped a single down the left field line, plating two runs.

Nicole Schneider (6-4) earned the win for the Roadrunners. She fired a complete game with three strikeouts and scattered nine hits. Ramapo tallied 15 hits in the game. Melendez and Walling each went 3-4 at the plate for Ramapo while May was perfect at the plate finishing 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they host NJAC rival Richard Stockton at 1pm. Ramapo will honor their senior class prior to the start of the double header.
