RUTGERS-CAMDEN SWEEPS RAMAPO IN NJAC ACTION

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ: The Rutgers-Camden softball team defeated the Roadrunners this afternoon, 2-1, in game one and 6-3, in game two. The Scarlet Raptors improve to 11-4-1 overall and they remain perfect in the NJAC at 4-0. The Roadrunners fall to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

In game one, RU-Camden jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI ground out before the Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the second. Rookie Nicole Hernandez laced a single to left field allowing sophomore Danielle Saporito to come around to tie the game, 1-1. Saporito reach base on an error earlier in the inning.

Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when the Scarlet Raptors would score the eventual game winning run. Starting pitcher Brittany Scott drove home Devon Welsh from third base on an infield ground out for the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ramapo would get the tying run to second base with one out, but the Scarlet Raptors would get out of the jam to preserve the win.

Scott earned the win in the circle for RU-Camden, improving to 7-3 overall. She struck out five and walked none while scattering five hits.

Masiello (2-6) took the loss; she struck out three, walked two and scattered seven hits in the complete game. Melendez was the lone Roadrunner with a multi-hit game, she finished 2-4.

In game two, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Junior Jaclyn Lima beat out an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on an infield hit by junior Kim LaPenta. Lima would later score on an error as the Scarlet Raptors tried to cut down Lima trying to score on a fielder's choice. Saporito then ripped a single to right field, scoring LaPenta for the second run of the game.

In the top of the second, RU-Camden scored two runs to tie the game before they took the lead in the third inning. Krystine Rice singled home Tabby Dick before Scott scored on Lindsay Day's sac fly to center field, 2-2. In the third, Rice and Scott recorded RBI singles to take a, 4-2 lead. The Scarlet Raptors added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, extending their lead to, 6-2.

Ramapo did not go away quietly in the sixth and seventh innings. With two outs in the sixth inning, Masiello ripped a double to center field which allowed Saporito to come around and score, cutting the lead in half, 6-3. In the seventh, pinch hitter sophomore Erin Witherspoon laced a lead-off triple down the right field line before Lima walked with one out. Lima advanced to second on an infield ground out before Scott got an infield ground out to end the Ramapo threat.

For the Scarlet Raptors, Scott (10-3) earned the win on the mound. She scattered seven hits while walking one and striking out none. Welsh and Dick each recorded two hits while Day collected two RBI.

Senior Nicole Schneider fell to 3-1 on the year for the Roadrunners. She struck out two, walked two and gave up eight hits. Saporito was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored for Ramapo.

The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to NJAC rival the College of NJ for a doubleheader starting at 3pm.
