Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ: The College of New Jersey softball team swept a NJAC double header today from Ramapo College, 4-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two in nine innings. The Lions improve to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners fall to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Kelly Hommen led off the top of the second inning with a home run to right field to put the Lion's on top, 1-0. They would score three more runs in the inning to extend their lead to 4-0. In the top of the third inning with one out Hommen ripped a double to center field before Deanna Utter laced a single up the middle allowing Hommen to come around to score.
The Lion's kept the Roadrunners off the board in the game as Ashtin Helmer (6-0) scattered six hits in the game and recorded eight strikeouts in the complete game win.
For the Roadrunners,
Harley Masiello (3-2) went the distance in the loss, striking out three and walking none.
In game two, TCNJ scored one run in the top of the first before Ramapo came back to tie the game, 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Ramapo would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kelsey Higgins reached on a fielder's choice before
Hannah Mucerino ripped a pitch down the left field line that turned into a ground rule double, leaving Higgins standing on third base. Higgins later scored on a wild pitch for the 2-1 Ramapo lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, TCNJ loaded the bases with two outs before Liz Huttner ripped the second pitch she saw back towards the pitcher that hit off the Ramapo pitcher's shin, and spun towards second base, allowing Kristen Lake to score to tie the game, 2-2.
Neither team could push a run across in the seventh inning forcing the game into extra innings. Jamie Purcell started on second base for TCNJ in the international tie-breaker rule. Purcell moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Ramapo got out of the inning with a ground out and infield pop up. Ramapo would get the winning run to third base in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice bunt before TCNJ recorded a double play to end the inning.
Kristen Wilson hit a shallow fly ball to right field for the second out of the inning before
Caitlin Smith tagged up from third base. Michelle Casale made the catch in right field and fired home before TCNJ catcher Purcell was able to tag out Smith to end the scoring threat for the Roadrunners.
In the ninth, TCNJ was able to plate two runs to take at 4-2 lead. Huttner started on second base before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ashley Sogluizzo then placed a perfect bunt allowing Huttner to cross home plate with the game eventual winning run. Sogluizzo later scored on a squeeze bunt from Hommen, who was out at first base on the play. In the bottom of ninth, Ramapo would bring the game winning run to the plate with no outs. Melanie Eskin beat out an infield single to put runner's at first and second with no outs. Higgins laid down a perfect sac bunt to move both runner's up a base. Following one out, pinch hitter
Erin Witherspoon was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs before relief pitcher Helmer induced a ground out to end the Ramapo threat.
Helmer picked up the win in relief for TCNJ as she improved to 7-0 on the year. She worked the final 4.0 innings, scattering four hits. Nicole Hronich started the game for the Lions, working the first five innings. She struck out three and walked five while only giving up two hits.
For the Roadrunners,
Nicole Schneider struck out three and gave up eight hits over the first 5.2 innings while Masiello (3-3) worked the final 3.1 innings.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University at 3:00pm.
