#6 KEAN DOWNS #4 RAMAPO, 6-3 IN NJAC TOURNAMENT

Glassboro, NJ: The #6 Kean University softball team defeated #4 Ramapo College today 6-3 in the NJAC Softball Tournament. The Cougars improve to 14-24 and Ramapo falls to 26-10 on the season. Kean advances to play the winner of #5 The College of NJ and #3 William Paterson University.

The Cougars scored one run in the top of the first inning to get on the board. Alicia Banz led off the game with a double to center field before Megan Cegielski ripped a single back up the middle allowing Banz to score, 1-0. Kean added two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Ramapo scored one run in the bottom of the third inning when Kelsey Higgins beat out a bunt single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a sac fly later in the inning by Caitlin Smith, 3-1. The Cougars added two runs in the fifth inning all with two outs when Kelly Moorehead ripped a double to right center plating Nicole Scarillo and Courtney Melchionna to take a 5-1 lead.

Ramapo got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Krystal Kmiechick walked to lead off the inning before Amanda Kent singled to left field before Smith hit into a fielder's choice and Kmiechick was out on the play. Both runner's moved up on a pass ball before Tiffany Fischer hit a sac fly to deep center allowing Kent to score Ramapo's second run of the game, 6-2. The Roadrunners scored in their final at bat when Kent ripped a triple to lead off the inning and scored on Smith's single up the middle, 6-3. Ramapo had runner's in scoring position in the inning but could not capitalize as Kean induced a ground out to end the game.

Deanna Giordano (10-6) surrendered eight hits and six runs, two earned in the loss. She recorded two strikeouts and one walk. Kent and Higgins were the only two Roadrunners with multi-hit games. Kent finished 3-3 with one run scored while Higgens was 2-3 with one run scored.

Courtney Smyth fired a complete game as she scattered seven hits and three runs with three walks and two stike outs.

The Roadrunners will not wait to see if they are awarded an ECAC bid.
