Mahwah, NJ: Kean University swept a NJAC softball doubleheader from Ramapo College today, 6-5 and 7-2. The Cougars improve to 9-17, 7-1 in the conference while the Roadrunners drop to 18-6, 4-4 in the NJAC.
Tiffany Fischer got Ramapo on the board in the first inning with a solo home run over the left field wall to take a 1-0 lead before the Cougars would take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Kean would score three unearned runs on two Ramapo errors all with two outs before Ramapo could record the final out of the inning.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Amanda Kent reached on a fielder's choice before she scored on a miscue by Kean later in the inning. Fischer scored on a single up the middle by
Janet Brown to tie the game at three.
In the fourth inning, Megan Cegielski drove in pinch runner Kelsey Hannan with a single to left field before Cegielski and Alicia Banz scored on a error in the outfield with two outs to take a 6-3 lead. Ramapo came back with with two runs in the fifth inning to come within one run.
Krystal Kmiechick reached base on an error before Kean recorded two straight outs.
Danielle Rothenberger then ripped her fourth home run over the left field wall, scoring Kmiechick. Ramapo would put a runner in scoring position in the final two innings but could not push the run across as the Cougars got out of both jams for the win.
Deanna Giordano (7-4) scattered six hits over the first four innings while striking out four, she allowed six runs with only one earned.
Courtney Smyth (4-8) was the winning pitcher for Kean firing a complete game. She struck out five and walked only one.
In game two, Kean got on the board in the with two unearned runs in the second inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Banz hit a ball to the Ramapo short stop, which was fielded cleanly but the throw sailed high over first base allowing the two runs to score, 2-0. The Cougars added one run in the fifth on a RBI single by Nicole Scarillo before Ramapo scored two runs in the sixth inning.
Kean would issue three walks in the inning to load the bases with one out before Kaitlyn Smith was hit by a pitch allowing Malgeri to score from third base. Fischer then knocked home Higgins with a single to short stop before the Cougars recorded the final out of the inning.
Kean loaded the bases with one out on three straight singles before Banz cracked a grand slam over the left center field wall to take a 7-2 lead. The Cougars recorded a 1-2-3 seventh as Smyth posted her first save of the season. Smyth entered the game in the sixth inning with one out and the bases loaded and got out of the jam. Samantha Sacco (1-0) earned her first win of the season, she struck out two and walked five over 5.1 innings of work.
Lyndsay Buehler suffered her second loss of the season, 9-2. She struck out two and walked none.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow in a key NJAC double header at Stockton College tomorrow starting at noon.
