Bethlehem, PA: The Moravian College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Ramapo College of New Jersey, winning 4-0 and 2-0 at Blue & Grey Field Thursday afternoon.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opening game. Junior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on a bunt single from freshman shortstop Katie Gross. Freshman designated player Samantha Mulderig grounded out to move the runners over before freshman first baseman Amanda Dizinno, pictured at right, hit an RBI fielder's choice as Falzarano beat the throw to the plate.
Moravian pushed three runs home in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Dizinno hit a one-out infield single as did freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr. Sophomore pitcher Jenna Carmon reached on an error to load the bases before junior outfielder Maura Agnew drew an RBI walk, scoring freshman pinch runner Rebekah Battersby. Freshman outfielder Brook Kowal was then hit by a pitch to send senior pinch runner Katie Flood home. Sophomore Oliva Evanko hit an RBI single to score Carmon with the final run of the game.
The Greyhounds had a 6-5 edge in hits with Mohr going two-for-three and Gross going two-for-four. Sophomore outfielder
Danielle Rothenberger was two-for-three for the Roadrunners.
Carmon, improved to 13-6 in the circle for Moravian, allowing five hits in her fourth shutout of the season. For Ramapo, junior
Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ) took the loss to fall to 6-6 after giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits and walk with two strikeouts.
Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning in the second game. Junior outfielder Amanda Paulus led off with a single and moved to third on a Ramapo throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Evanko. Falzarano hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Paulus while Evanko moved to third on an errant throw home. After an out, Evanko crossed the plate on the third Roadrunner error of the inning on a pop fly hit by Mulderig.
Ramapo had a 6-4 advantage in hits in the second contest with freshman third baseman
Lisa Orlando (Bloomfield, NJ) going two-for-three and junior designated player
Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ) going two-for-four.
Junior Elizabeth Python improved to 5-2 for the Greyhounds after allowing five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings before leaving the game with a 3-0 count on freshman pinch hitter
Janet Brown (Point Pleasant, NJ) due to an injury. Carmon came on to record her second save of the season with a hit and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Junior
Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ) took the loss for the Roadrunners, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Ramapo returns to the field on Saturday when they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University at 1:00 PM.
