RAMAPO DOWNS NJCU

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a NJAC double header from New Jersey City University today, 2-1 in eight innings and 10-2 in five. The Roadrunners even their conference record to 4-4 and are 16-4 overall while the Gothic Knights now stand at 9-15 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

In game one, NJCU took the lead on a fielder's choice by rookie Megan Ginter (Nutley, NJ) scoring rookie Nicole Sarica (Linden, NJ) with the bases loaded. The Roadrunners turn a triple play on the ground ball the third base as the Gothic Knights tried to advance on the bases.

The Gothic Knights would spoil Ramapo's chances to score until the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Stephanie Malgeri (Montville, NJ) ripped a solo home run over the right field fence, her first of the year to tie the game at 1-1. Neither Ramapo or NJCU could push a run across the plate in the seventh inning sending the game into the eighth. The Roadrunners would hold the Gothic Knights in the top half of the eighth inning.

Malgeri was placed on second base before being moved over on a fielder's choice by rookie Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) and junior Jamie Chalkley (West Milford, NJ) ripped a line drive single to left field to plate the winning run for Ramapo, 2-1.

Sophomore Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ) picked up her ninth win of the season in the complete game, she struck out four and walked none. Chalkley was 2-3 with one RBI while Malgeri was 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Rothernberger went 2-4 at the plate.

Senior Lacey Skowronoski (Bayonne, NJ) went the distance for NJCU, she struck out two and walked none in the loss.

In game two the Roadrunners wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs (three earned) in the top of the first inning. Senior Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ) ripped her second home run of the season, a three run home run over the left field fence plating junior Katie Donnelly (North Haledon, NJ) and sophomore Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ) who singled and reached on an error respectively. Rookie Danielle Rothenberger (Livingston, NJ) then ripped her first career home run over the left field wall to put the Roadrunners up 4-0. Fischer reached on a walk and scored on Chalkley's single to left field to make it 5-0.

Ramapo would score three runs in the second inning, Wong doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a wild pitch. Farmer and Rothenberger both walked before senior Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ) singled to load the bases and pinch hitter rookie Laura Herget (Paramus, NJ) knocked in a run with a groundout to the pitcher. Sophomore Brittney McKeon (Toms River, NJ) singled home Malgeri for the third run of the inning with a single to left field. Ramapo would score two more runs in the game to make it 10-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth.

NJCU would get two unearned runs back in the fourth when Skowronski walked and junior Tara Perrucci (Wallington, NJ) reached on an error. One out later, Skowronski would score on a wild pitch before Perrucci came home on a Ramapo error.

Sophomore Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ) and rookie Lauren Shaw (Wayne, NJ) held the Roadrunners to only one hit over five innings of work. Buehler (7-3) struck out four without giving up a hit. Saw pitched the final inning of work for the Roadrunners letting up one hit.

McKeon was a perfect 3-3 in the game with a RBI while Rothenberger and Schriber were each 2-3 with one run scored and a RBI.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 11th for a NJAC double header against Rutgers-Camden University at 1:00 PM.
