Ramapo earns pair of one-run wins in NJAC softball at Rutgers-Camden

Camden, NJ:  Freshman shortstop Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) doubled home the winning runs in the eighth inning of the opening game and freshman Lauren Shaw (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) earned her first collegiate win in the nightcap as the 20th-ranked Ramapo College softball team won a pair of one-run games at Rutgers University-Camden Monday night in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.

Two days after their scheduled NJAC doubleheader was postponed by rain, the Roadrunners made the return trip to Camden and posted a 5-4 extra-inning win before earning the sweep with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
The wins lift Ramapo to 18-4 overall and 6-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 18-11 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

Both teams play NJAC doubleheaders on the road Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m. Ramapo visits Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden is at The College of New Jersey. Ramapo 5, Rutgers-Camden 4 (8 innings)
In the opening game, the Roadrunners pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning after starting the frame with a runner at second base under the international tie-breaker rule. Following a fielder's choice and a walk, Fischer ripped her two-run double.  The Lady Raptors came back with one run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by senior designated player Cristina Petrutz (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), but Ramapo held on for the win.

Rutgers-Camden scored a pair of first-inning runs on a two-run single by freshman catcher Erika Drayton (Blackwood, NJ/Triton Regional), but Ramapo knotted the score with two in the top of the third, one of them unearned. A walk and an error set the stage for an RBI single from sophomore left fielder Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and a game-tying RBI ground out by senior designated player Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East).

The Raptors regained the lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the third and Ramapo tied the game in the sixth on a leadoff home run by senior third baseman Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ/Mount St. Dominic). The Roadrunners collected only five hits off losing pitcher Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), but added five walks. Powell struck out two.

Sophomore Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) picked up the win for the Roadrunners. Giordano (10-1) scattered eight hits and three walks, striking out five and allowing only two earned runs.

The lone multiple-hit players in the game were Raptor sophomore second baseman Brooke Keenan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior left fielder Stephanie Klotz (Nutley, NJ/Nutley). Keenan went 2-for-2 with two runs, while Klotz was 2-for-5 with one run.

Ramapo 3, Rutgers-Camden 2
In the nightcap, the Raptors' Powell and Roadrunners' Shaw hooked up in a pitcher's duel before Shaw (1-0) earned her first win with a five-hitter. She allowed only two unearned runs and no walks, while striking out two. Powell (9-7) hurled four innings of six-hit ball, allowing all three runs, only one earned. She walked one and fanned two.

Ramapo scored a run in the third on a double by Fischer and an RBI single by sophomore catcher Stephanie Malgeri (Montville, NJ/Montville). The Roadrunners added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, both scoring on a two-out infield error.

Rutgers-Camden added runs in a similar fashion in the fifth, with sisters Amanda and Vicki D'Anduono (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) reaching on a double and a single, respectively, and scoring on a two-out error.
Fischer went 2-for-3 with two runs for Ramapo, while Vicki D'Anduono went 2-for-3 with one run for Rutgers-Camden.
