Katie Norton (Livingston, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic) tossed a complete game five hitter as No. 4 seed Ramapo College staved off elimination from the 2007 NCAA Division III Softball Montclair, NJ Regional with a 3-1 victory over No. 7 seed Manhattanville at the MSU Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Katie Donnelly (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian) had an RBI for the Roadrunners (31-9), who now advance into Game 8 of the tournament against either King's College or Gettysburg at 6:00 pm on Friday. The second day of action was delayed for two hours after a morning rainstorm.
Junior first baseman Caitlyn Conklin (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Manhattanville, which finished the season at 27-10. The Valiants were making their third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and fourth in the last six years.
Knotted at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Ramapo began its winning rally as
Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) led off with a single to center.
Michele Rossi (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) followed with an infield hit to short and pinch runner
Kendall Patton (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) took third as the throw to get Rossi skipped away. Chalkley then smacked a single to left field to drive in the go-ahead run. Donnelly followed with a grounder up the middle for a base hit to score Rossi with the final run.
Norton improved to 17-4 as she allowed a run and five hits, striking out six and walking one. Maggie Thomas (Malvern, PA/Villa Maria Academy) suffered her second tough loss of the tournament. Thomas, who fell to MSU on Friday in nine innings 3-2, gave up three runs (one earned) and eight hits, striking out one.
Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the second as
Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) singled and
Leah Mondadori (Rutherford, NJ/Emerson) followed with a base hit. Rossi was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Chalkley grounded into a fielder's choice to give the Roadrunners the lead. Manhattanville tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Casey Killard (East Meadow, NY/Tresper Clarke) led off with a double and scored as Conklin drove a base hit to left field.
Ginny O'Brien (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) was 2-for-3 for the Roadrunners.
