RALEIGH, NC – The 2006 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament opened this morning at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina and game one pinned two familiar foes against each other for the sixth time this season. Ramapo College and Rutgers-Camden University set the stage for what should be an exciting tournament.
Heather Taylor stepped in and belted a two run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Rutgers-Camden up 3-1 and advance the Scarlet Raptors into the second round of the winner's bracket.
Ramapo started the scoring in the top of the third when junior DH
Becky Pollak knocked in junior
Ginny O'Brien, who opened the inning with a double to left field, to put the Roadrunners up 1-0 with the early lead. The lead only lasted until Marissa Van Cleef took the plate in the bottom half of the third inning with an RBI single to advance Alaina Giles around the base path to knot the game up at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning, but that would be the last of the scoring until the sixth inning with Taylor's RBI double.
Roadrunners pitcher, sophomore
Katie Norton battled her way out of a fourth inning scare. The Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden could not capitalize with bases loaded and Norton retired the side with some phenomenal defensive help by her infield.
The bats for both teams were quite until the bottom of the sixth when Megan Farrell of Rutgers-Camden slapped a base hit to start the rally. Farrell advanced when Maureen Baney laid down a sacrifice bunt and put the runner on second with one out. Runners were on first and second after Amber Parker walked her way down the baseline when Norton served up four balls setting the stage for Heather Taylor. Taylor came in as a pinch hitter and made the most of her short time in the game. She took pitcher Norton deep to left-center field for a double and platted both Farrell and Parker to break the tie and give the Scarlet Raptors a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Erica Moore was 2-3 and O'Brien was 1-2 with one run scored for Ramapo.
Rutger-Camden moves to 44-5 on the season and will take on Coe on Saturday at 4:00 PM. The loss drops Ramapo (36-12 overall) into the bottom bracket and they will face Ithaca Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
