Clermont, FL: The Ramapo College softball team (8-1 overall) split a pair of games this afternoon at THE Spring Games. The Roadrunners defeated Babson College 11-3 in five innings before suffering their first loss of the season to Trinity College (CT), 9-7.
Game #1: Ramapo 11, Babson 3 | Five Innings
The Roadrunners put up four runs in the bottom of the first. Clay'le Correa-Vanness ripped a single to lead off the game and later scored on an infield error, 1-0.
Aimee Notaro and
Alex Hastings each walked with the bases loaded to push home two more runs for a 3-0 lead.
Lia Milsom drove in
Hannah Hensler with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, 4-0. In the second the bases were loaded once again for Hastings as she worked a walk to plate
Kori Gargiulo for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the third inning Babson plated three runs before Ramapo added two in the bottom half of the inning.
Avery Kontura drew a walk with two outs before Gargiulo launched her second home run of the season over the left field wall to extend the lead, 7-3. In the fifth, Ramapo added four runs to take the game 11-3. Kontura drove in Correa-Vanness and Milsom with a two-RBI single to left field before Gargiulo belted an RBI double to the left-center field wall which allowed Kontura to score, 10-3. The final run came in as
Paley Sullivan laced a single to center field which allowed Gargiulo to score, 11-3.
Brooke Knight (3-0) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners as she worked the final three innings. Knight struck out one, walked none and let up only one hit.
Gabby Morgan started in the circle for Ramapo as surrendered five hits and three runs (one earned) in two innings.
Game #2: Trinity (CT) 9, Ramapo 7
The Roadrunners scored first in the game as Hensler ripped a double to left-center field as Kontura and Gargiulo came around to score. In the bottom of the first, the Bantam's scored four runs aided by three Ramapo errors to take a 4-2 lead. In the second inning, Sullivan launched a solo home run, her fifth of the season, to score Ramapo's third run of the game, 3-4. Emily Goddard came back in the bottom of the second and hit a two-run home run to push the Trinity lead, 6-3. A solo home run and a two-RBI single from the Bantam's in the fourth extended their lead, 9-3. In the top of the fifth, the bases were loaded for Sullivan who drew a one-out walk to push home the Roadrunner's fourth run of the game. Trinity then induced a strikeout and line out to second base to end the Ramapo threat as they held at 9-4 lead. Ramapo would add three runs to their side of the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Trinity lead to just two. Walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs before Milsom worked a walk to push home Notaro, 5-9. Sullivan later scored on a wild pitch before Trinity induced a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Kontura then lifted a sac fly to center field which plated pinch-runner
Emily Reilly before the Trinity defense got the third out at third base. The Roadrunners attempted to advance to third base on the throw home while the Trinity defense made a heads up play and threw down to third to tag the runner with the final out of the game and the 9-7 win.
Mikayla McJilton (2-1) took the tough loss in the circle for Ramapo as she surrendered four hits and six runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings of work while she struck out one and walked three. Knight worked the middle 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and one walk while she let up five hits and three runs (one earned).
Gabby Morgan pitched the final inning for Ramapo with three strikeouts while she let up just one hit. Sullivan led the way at the plate as she finished 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 11:15 AM and Worcester State University at 1:30 PM.
