Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated Manhattanville University today at the Bradley Center in non-conference action, 51-47. The Roadrunners (5-7 overall) snapped a seven-game win streak by the Valiants who now drop to 8-3 overall.
The Roadrunner defense held the Valiants from scoring double digits in two quarters in the game including just five points in the fourth quarter. The Valiants turned the ball over 16 times in the game as the Roadrunners were able to capitalize and score 16 points. The game saw 10 lead changes including three times in the final quarter of action. Manhattanville took a 42-41 lead into the fourth quarter before each team added a pair of made free throws.
Denay Jones added two points for the Roadrunners with a layup to take a 45-44 lead with 6:30 remaining. Amanda Orlando would give the Valiants a one-point lead with a layup before Jones made one of two free throws to re-tie the game at 46 with 3:35 on the clock. Maia Velazquez converted one of two free throws for Manhattanville to regain a one-point lead, their final lead of the game with 2:37 remaining.
Lauren Flatt scored the final five points for the Roadrunners. With 38 second remaining, Flatt recorded a layup to give Ramapo a 48-47 lead. Down at the other end of the court, Flatt came up big with a block as
Jelly Quadrino grabbed the defensive rebound. Following a flagrant one foul by the Valiants, Flatt converted both free throws with 13 seconds remaining, 50-47. With the flagrant one foul, the Roadrunners kept possession as Manhattanville was once again forced to foul. Flatt converted one of two to give Ramapo a four-point lead, 51-47. The Valiants' final shot attempt did not convert as Ramapo held on for the non-conference victory.
Flatt led the way with 19 points as she finished 6-8 from the field, 3-4 from the free throw line and 4-5 from the three-point line. Jones added 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals, four blocked shots and four assists.
Vanessa Kohler contributed with six points and six rebounds while
Ariana Madrid and
Ava Burke each recorded five rebounds while Madrid tallied four points. Ramapo shot 36% (18-49) from the field, 40% (6-15) from the three-point line and 75% (9-12) from the free throw line.
Three Valiants scored in double figures as they were led by Orlando who posted 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Julie DeBrocky contributed with 11 points including three made three-pointers while Ester Ramos also tallied 11 points and a team high nine rebounds. The team shot 32% (18-56) from the field, 27% (3-11) from the three-point line and 53% (8-15) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on the road at NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University on Wednesday, Jan. 7th at 6:00 PM.
