Mahwah, NJ: The Montclair State University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College, 70-48, tonight in NJAC action. The Red Hawks improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners drop to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.
A strong first half including holding the Roadrunners to just four points in the second quarter gave the Red Hawks a 33-13 lead at halftime. Ramapo outscored MSU 17-16 in the third quarter while the Red Hawks tallied 21 points in the final quarter of action to the Roadrunner's 18. The game was tied three times in the first quarter while pulled away for a four-point lead with a mini 5-0 run. Ave Burke sank a three-pointer and
Ariana Madrid converted a pair of free throws for a 9-5 score with just over four minutes on the clock. MSU then went on an 8-0 run that closed out the first quarter giving them a 13-9 lead. That bled into the second quarter as they continued the run with a 20-point swing to take a 33-9 lead with 1:41 left to play.
Lauren Flatt and
Denay Jones each scored a basket in the final minutes of the quarter to snap the Red Hawk run. The Red Hawks led by double digits the rest of the way, their biggest lead being 26 points twice in the final quarter of action.
Nearly everyone who saw the court for the Red Hawks tallied a point in the game as they were led by Alyssa Craigwell who posted 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals, three assists and one block. Samantha Phillip also scored in double figures as she collected 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bella Bruce tallied eight rebounds while adding five points while Alexis Strollo posted eight points, two assists and three steals. The team shot 38% (24-63) from the floor, 32% (9-28) from the three-point line and 81% (13-16) from the free throw line. They also tallied 24 points off Ramapo turnovers in the game.
For the Roadrunners, Jones led the way with 15 points with two rebounds, one steal and one assist. Burke added seven points, six rebounds and one assist while
Jayda Sharp contributed with six points and four rebounds (three offensive) in 11 minutes of action. Ramapo shot 34% (18-53) from the field, 37% (3-8) from the three-point line and 64% (9-14) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners posted 16 points off MSU turnovers while they added nine second chance points.
