Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team held off a comeback from Kean University tonight at the Bradley Center to defeat the Cougars, 57-50. The Roadrunners move to 7-12 overall and 2-10 in the NJAC while the Cougars now stand at 2-14 overall and 2-10 in the league.
Ramapo pushed the pace early and opened up a 17-9 lead after the first quarter before they held Kean to just four points in the second quarter for a 31-13 lead at halftime. Kean would hold Ramapo to just eight points in the third quarter while they added 15 points to their side of the scoreboard, 39-28. The Roadrunners would go up by 15 with a jumper from
Lauren Flatt with 7:45 remaining in the game before Kean went on a 17-6 run to close the gap to just four points. The run was highlighted by three made three-pointers including one from Peyton Smith to cap off the run with 2:06 on the clock. Â
Jocelyn Huancaya and
Jelly Quadrino would each convert a pair of free throws to extend the Ramapo lead back to eight with 42 seconds remaining in the game. Kean recorded one free throw and a layup from Cara McCoy to close out the game while Ramapo's final two points were made on the free throw line as they posted the seven-point victory at home, 57-50.
Two Roadrunners recorded a double figure game as Jones posted a career high 20 points while she added eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Flatt posted 16 points and four rebounds while
Emma Cartwright collected seven points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Ramapo shot 35% (18-51) from the field, 37% (6-16) from the three-point line and 51% (15-29) from the free throw line. The Ramapo defense forced 17 Kean turnovers in the game.
For Kean, Smith led the way with 10 points while Maya Edwards posted nine points and two assists. Makaila Desire added eight points and a team high 13 rebounds while Erika Mercedes contributed with eight points and six rebounds. The team shot 29% (19-65) from the field, 20% (5-25) from the three-point line and 58% (7-12) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31st when they host TCNJ in a NJAC game at 3:00 PM.Â
