SOFTBALL SWEEPS JOHN JAY

RYGIEL, KONTURA HIT CAREER MARKS

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept non-conference rival John Jay College today at the Athletic Center. The Roadrunners (12-1) defeated the Bloodhounds (13-3) in game one, 13-2 in five innings; and 13-5 in six innings in game two.
 
Game One
Ramapo scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Avery Kontura scored on a wild pitch before Rebecca Airel came around to score on an RBI single from Alex Hastings. Hannah Hensler bounced into an RBI ground out which plated Yasbellah Otero, 3-0.  Katie Rygiel and Avery Kontura hit back-to-back doubles as Rygiel came around to score. Hastings worked a bases loaded walk to plate Kontura before Airel scored on a wild pitch, 6-0. John Jay got on the board in the top of the third with a solo home run from Maleea Gallaspy. In the third Ramapo added four runs for a 10-1 lead. The inning was highlighted with three straight RBI hits from Kontura, Airel and Hastings. In the fourth inning, Rygiel drove in Kori Gargiulo with a hard hit single up the middle before Kontura blasted a double to left field to pick up two RBI, 13-1. This was Kontura's 100th hit of her career. John Jay added their second run in the fifth inning with a sac fly from Kendal Bryant.
 
Ramapo starting pitcher Marissa DiPaolo (5-1) struck out one, walked one and surrendered five hits and one run over four innings pitched. Brook Knight pitched the final inning for the Roadrunners letting up one hit and one run.
 
Game Two
The Roadrunners defeated John Jay in a run-ruled game two, 13-5. The Bloodhounds scored early with an RBI double from Alyssa Cadolino in the top of the first before Ramapo tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Rygiel led off with a single before going first to third on a single from Airel. With one out and runners at the corners, Hastings drove in Rygiel with a hard hit RBI single, 1-1. In the second, Emily Reilly put down a bunt single before Rygiel connected on a two-out two-RBI home run. The home run gave Ramapo the lead for good, 3-1, while Rygiel set the new Roadrunner career RBI record with her 118th and counting. In the fourth inning, Hannah Hensler doubled and later scored on a wild pitch before Reilly also scored on a wild pitch, 5-1. Kontura connected a double to plate Lia Milsom before Otero plated Kontura with a RBI double of her own, 7-1.  John Jay came back to score four runs on six hits in the fifth inning while Ramapo added six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth for the run rule win, 13-5. Kontura plated the game's final run with an RBI single which allowed Reilly to score.
 
Ramapo pounded out 14 hits in the game including three doubles and one home run. Kontura finished 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored while Rygiel finished 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Otero, Hastings and Reilly each recorded two hits in the game. Kassy Stefanski (5-0) struck out four, walked none while she gave up ten hits and five runs in 4.2 innings of work. Knight earned her third save of the season as she surrendered just one hit over the final 1.1 innings of work.
 
The Roadrunners, who are ranked #25 in the more recent NFCA Top 25 Poll, return to action tomorrow at home as they host Hunter College at 3pm.
