Winter Haven, FL: The Ramapo College softball team (7-0) picked up two wins to extend their win streak to seven games. The Roadrunners defeated the University of Wisconsin La Crosse , 5-4 in eight innings and Trinity College (CT), 11-3.
Game One
Ramapo scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Clay'le Correa-Vanness led off with a walk before
Katie Rygiel belted a double to left-center to put runners on second and third.
Avery Kontura bounced into a 6-3 put out which allowed Correa-Vanness to score, 1-0.
Rebecca Airel and
Kori Gargiulo each walked to load the bases before
Hannah Hensler was hit by a pitch to force home Rygiel, 2-0. Airel later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. In the top of the fifth, the Eagles plated two runs on a double from Kyra Lard to shrink the Roadrunner lead to just one. In the top of the sixth, Maddy Bornbach doubled to left field before being lifted for pinch runner Cristin Casey. Casey moved up one base on a sac bunt before Marissa Pease plated her with an RBI single to tie the game, 3-3.
Neither team would score in regulation, sending the game into extra innings. Pinch runner Kaeley Niemiec started on second base before moving to third on an errant throw by the Roadrunners while the ball carried into the outfield which allowed Niemiec to score, 4-3. In Ramapo's half of the eighth, Gargiulo started on second base before
Ysabellah Otero was hit by a pitch. A sac bunt from Hensler moved the up one base and
Niah Murphy pinch ran for Otero. With one out,
Alex Hastings walked on four pitches to load the bases before
Lia Milsom slapped a ground ball back to the pitcher. The throw home was in the dirt and got away from the Eagles catcher which allowed both Gargiulo and Murphy to score for the game-tying and game-winning runs, 5-4.
Brooke Knight (2-0) earned the win in the circle as she worked the final 3.1 innings. She struck out one and let up two hits and two runs (one earned).
Kassy Stefanski worked the first 4.2 innings for the Roadrunners as she struck out three, walked none and surrendered just five hits and two runs.
Game Two
Trinity scored one run in the first while Ramapo posted three in the third and one in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Correa-Vanness laced a double into the right-center field gap which allowed
Alex Hastings to score to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the third, Rygiel singled home Correa-Vanness to take a 2-1 lead. Rygiel moved up to second on a hard hit ground out from Kontura before Rygiel scored from second on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead. In the fourth, Hensler walked and later scored on an error, 4-1.
In the fifth, Trinity added two runs to come within one before Ramapo's Airel blasted her first career grand slam in the sixth inning to extend the Ramapo lead, 8-3. The Roadrunners added three more runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by
Sonali Rodriguez's RBI double to center field which plated Hensler.
Marissa DiPaolo (3-0) earned the win in the circle as she struck out three, walked one and scattered three hits over the first 4.1 innings of work. Knight came into the game in the fourth with one out and closed out the game to earn her second save of the season. She struck out five, walked one and let up just one hit in the final 2.2 innings.
Correa-Vanness led the way finishing 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored while Airel posted a team high four RBI and Rygiel plated two and scored two.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the College of Wooster at 2:00pm and the #16 ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point at 4:15pm.
