Union, NJ: The Kean University women's basketball team outlasted Ramapo College tonight at Hardwood Arena in a 63-55 NJAC victory. The Cougars move to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference while the Roadrunners move to 2-17 overall and 1-11 in the league.
Kean opened up the game on an 8-0 run before Ramapo got on the board with a basket from
Alison Ahern. Late in the first, Ramapo would go on a 10-0 run cutting the Kean lead to just one, 15-14. The Cougars would score back-to-back layups to end the first quarter up 19-14. In the second, a three-pointer from Jordyn Keating gave the Cougars a five-point lead before Ramapo scored back-to-back baskets from
Damiya Graham and
Emma Cartwright. Kean led by one before Cara McCoy scored on a jumper and Brittany Graff sank a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the second. Kean went into the locker room up six, 30-24.
The Cougars outscored Ramapo in the third with 20 points to the Roadrunners 15. A three-pointer from Graf gave the Cougars a 39-27 lead with 6:32 on the clock before Ramapo was able to cut the lead to five with 1:10 on the clock.
Angelene Mattingly sank a three-pointer for Ramapo to shrink the Kean lead, 44-39. In the final minute of play in the quarter, Kean went on a 9-0 run which include a tip-in and-one play and back-to-back three-pointers, 50-39. In the fourth, Ramapo once again shrunk the Kean lead to just four with less than four minutes left to play. Kean then stretched the lead back out to nine. The Cougars would score the final three points of the game from the free throw line to hold onto the 63-55 victory.
Kean was led by Graff who posted 17 points including four three-pointers while Maddison Vaughn posted 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. McCoy contributed with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Cougars shot 38% (24-63) from the floor, 32% (9-28) from the three-point line and 75% (6-8) from the free throw line.
Ahern led the Roadrunners with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds while adding two steals, two assists and a block.
Lauren Flatt added 12 points and four rebounds while Cartwright and
Jocelyn Huancaya each collected nine points in the game. The Roadrunners shot 39% (22-56) from the floor, 23% (3-13) from the three-point line and 66% (8-12) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they travel to the College of New Jersey for a NJAC game at 1:00 PM.
