Clermont, FL: The Ramapo College softball team topped #14 Tufts University in game one, 2-1, and defeated the University of Plattsburgh State in game two, 11-5. The Roadrunners improve to 9-3 overall.
Game 1:
Ramapo handed Tufts (8-1) their first loss of the season in the first game of the afternoon. Ramapo got on the board first in the top of the second.
Avery Kontura led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt from
Ysabellah Otero before
Kori Gargiulo drilled a hard hit single to left field to plate Kontura, 1-0.
Tufts tied the game with an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before Ramapo came back with the game-winning run in the top of the sixth.
Alexis Corra reached on a single, moved to second on a bunt single from
Mahogany Wheeler before a pass ball allowed each of them to move up one base.
Avery Bartolomeo then poked a single back up the middle which allowed Corra to score, 2-1.
Ramapo worked out of jams in the final two innings against the Jumbos as they moved the tying run to second base in the 6th and 7th innings.
Brooke Knight earned her first save of the season as she worked the final two innings in the circle for the Roadrunners and let up just one hit.
Marissa DiPaolo (3-0) struck out three, walked three and scattered three hits in five complete innings.
Katie Rygiel and Kori Gariulo each collected two hits in the game for the Roadrunners.
Game 2:
Plattsburgh State scored one run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead before
Avery Kontura drove home two RBI with a triple to right field to put Ramapo up, 2-1. Plattsburgh State added four runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead before the Roadrunners took the lead back in the third with five runs. Gargiulo drove in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield before Rygiel hit a bases loaded triple to plate all three baserunners for a 7-5 lead. Niah Murphy with a single, 8-5, before Ramapo added three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead, 11-5. Rygiel doubled home
Hannah Hensler before Bartlomeo plated Rygiel with an RBI single and Kontura singled home Wheeler with the team's final run of the game.
Kassy Stefanski (4-2) earned the win in the circle in relief as she struck out seven, walked none and let up just one hit and no runs in 4.2 innings of work. Brook Knight worked the seventh as she struck out two.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon with games against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11:15 AM and Kalamazoo College at 1:30 PM.
