Clermont, FL: The Ramapo College softball team earned a pair of shutout victories at THE Spring Games. Ramapo moved to 3-1 overall with wins over Knox College (1-5 overall) and Wellesley College (0-2 overall).
Ramapo 22, Knox 0 – five innings.
Ramapo belted out 27 hits including eight extra base hits with three home runs against Knox in a five inning game. The Roadrunners exploded with ten runs in the second, nine runs in the third and three in the fourth.
Kori Gargiulo plated the first run for the Roadrunners with an RBI single before she later scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.
Katie Rygiel laced a two RBI triple down the left field line before
Alexis Corra and
Avery Kontura each plated an RBI with a single, 6-0. Gargiulo drew a bases loaded walk before
Ysabellah Otero knocked in two of her own with a two RBI double, 9-0. Clay'le Correa-Vanness drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single. Ramapo's third inning was highlighted with three home runs. Kontura and Corra each belted out three-run home runs while
Mahogany Wheeler added a solo home run. In the fourth, Ramapo added three runs with run-scoring singles from Rygiel, Corra and Brook Knight.
Wheeler (1-0) earned the win in the circle while Knight closed out the game for the Roadrunners as they combined for a three-hit shutout. Wheeler let up just two hits in three innings of work while Knight finished the final two innings as she surrendered just one hit. Knight struck out three and walked one.
Correa-Vaness finished 5-5 with three runs scored and one RBI while Corra finished 4-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Rygiel finished 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Ramapo 9, Wellesley 0 – six innings
Ramapo pushed one run across in the bottom of the second on an infield error. With one out Gargiulo laced a double to left-center field before advancing to third on a dropped third strike. Leah Milsom put down a bunt that was misplayed by the Knox defense to put runners on the corners with two outs. Milsom stole second before Rygiel reached on an infield error which allowed Gargiulo to score, 1-0. Roadrunner starting pitcher Kassy Stefanksi and the defense got out of a jam in the top of the third inning. Wellesley recorded a leadoff single before the next batter fouled out to Corra behind the plate on a bunt. Elli DeCleen beat out a bunt single to put runners at first and second before the next batter popped up a bunt to Corra for the second out. Stefanski then induced a pop fly to left field for the final out of the inning. Stefanski would hold Wellesley hitless the remainder of the game.
In the fourth, Gargiulo belted her first career home run to add one run for the Roadrunners, 2-0. In the fifth, Kontura hit a solo home run to center field to push the score, 3-0. In the sixth inning, Ramapo scored six runs for the eight-run rule. Rygiel drove home
Niah Murphy with an RBI single before Rygiel later scored on a single from Corra for a 5-0 score. With the bases loaded, Kontura launched a grand slam over the left field wall to plate four more runs, 9-0.
Stefanski (2-0) struck out six, walked one and scattered two hits in six innings of work. Ramapo collected 12 hits as Corra led the way finishing 3-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Rygiel, Wheeler and Kontura each finished 2-4 while Gargiulo finished 2-3.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Bowdoin College at 4:00 PM and Amherst College at 6:15 PM.
