Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team defeated William Paterson University, 6-3, in game one while the Roadrunners and Pioneers played to a 1-1 tie through eight innings of play in game two before the game was called due to darkness. The Roadrunners move to 16-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the NJAC while the Pioneers now stand at 13-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.
Game One
Ramapo took a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
Avery Kontura drove in
Mahogany Wheeler with a single to center field in the first. In the second, Katie Rigiel drove home
Nicole Cerasi with a single before Corra plated
Jaclyn Monaco with an RBI groundout, 3-0. In the fourth, WPU tied the game with three runs before the Roadrunners came back in the bottom half of the inning. Wheeler came up big with a hard hit single back up the middle to plate Rygiel and Monaco for the 5-3 lead. Ramapo scored an insurance run in the 5th as
Kori Gargiulo scored on an infield single from Monaco, 6-3.
Kassy Sefankski (6-2) spun a four-hit complete game with nine strikeouts and no walks. She surrendered three runs (none earned). Ramapo recorded 12 hits in the game as Kontura and Monaco each posted three hits while Rygiel and Wheeler collected two.
Game 2
Each team scored one run in the seventh to force extra innings, 1-1. Both teams kept one another off the scoreboard in the extra frame before the game was called due to darkness.
In the top of the seventh, WPU recorded three straight singles including a pinch-hit RBI single from Grace Gaskill to plate the go-ahead run, 1-0. In the bottom of the inning, Monaco poked a single to left field before stealing second base. Rygiel then laced a huge RBI double off the left field wall, which allowed Monaco to score the game-tying run, 1-1. WPU would induce an infield pop-up and a hard hit line out back to the pitcher for the first two outs of the inning. Rygiel moved up to third on a wild pitch before WPU induced a hard hit ground out to third base to end the Ramapo threat. In the top of the eighth, Vera was placed on second base before Ramapo relief pitcher Brook Knight got three straight outs, an infield pop-up, strike out and ground out. In the bottom of the eighth,
Lia Milsom pinch ran and started on second base. Milsom tried to advance to third on a ground ball in the infield before the WPU defense threw to third; it was a close play and Milson was called out for the first out of the inning. Kontura moved to second on a sac bunt before
Anna Messina singled to left field to put runners on the corners with two outs. WPU got the final out of the inning on a fly ball to right field before the game was called for darkness. Each team gets a point in the NJAC standings for the tie.
Marissa DiPaolo started in the circle for Ramapo as she struck out three, walked two and let up six hits and one run in six innings of work. Knight struck out two and let up two runs in two innings of relief. Ramapo collected ten hits in game two as Rygiel, Wheeler and Messina all posted two each.
For the Pioneers, Lilah Guthy struck out two, walked one and let up nine hits and one run in 6.1 innings of work. Jaelynn Miller worked the final 1.2 innings in relief and only let up one hit.
The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, April 6th when they host Hunter College in non-conference action at 3pm.
