SOFTBALL SPLITS IN NJAC SEASON OPENER

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team split a pair of NJAC games at home this afternoon with Stockton University to open the NJAC portion of the schedule. The Roadrunners move to 15-5 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC while the Ospreys now stand at 9-11 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Game One
The Roadrunners earned a 7-3 win in game one as Ramapo scored all seven runs in the fourth inning while the Ospreys posted three in the top of the sixth. Avery Kontura put Ramapo on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run plating both Mahogany Wheeler and Avery Bartolomeo for a 3-0 lead. Anna Messina scored on Katie Rygiel's sac fly before Alexis Corra laced a double to the left-center field wall to plate Nicol Cerasi and Jaclyn Monaco for a 6-0 lead. Corra would later score from third base on a wild pitch to extend the lead, 7-0. In the sixth, Stockton got back three runs with RBI singles from Jenna Patterson and Charli Czaczkowski while Megan Sears plated the third run with an RBI groundout, 3-7.

Marissa DiPaolo (5-0) struck out five, walked four and scattered three hits in 5.1 innings of work to earn the win in the circle this afternoon for Ramapo. Brook Knight worked the final 1.2 innings without letting up a hit or run while striking out one.

Messina led the Roadrunners at the plate finishing 2-3 with one run scored while Kontura recorded a team high three RBI and Corra recorded two.

Game Two
Stockton held onto a 6-4 victory in game two. The Ospreys would score early in the game and work out of a few jams as they turned three double plays late in the game to preserve the win. Lily James and Czaczkowski connected on back-to-back home runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Two more runs would cross home plate on wild pitches in the third for a 4-0 lead before the fifth run scored during a rundown between first and second base. The Roadrunners made the third out of the inning defensively during the rundown but the runner on third was able to cross home plate before the out was made.

In the fourth inning, Wheeler reached on an error before Kontura connected on her second home run of the day to put Ramapo on the board, 2-5. Czaczkowski singled home Stockton's sixth run of the game in the top of the seventh. Ramapo would load the bases in the seventh as Messina led off with a single, Cerasi worked a walk and Monaco beat out an infield single. Stockton would turn their third double play of the game to hold the Osprey lead for the first two outs of the inning. Messina later scored on an infield error by Stockton to score Ramapo's fourth run before a lineout back to the pitcher would end the game and preserve the win for Stockton, 6-4.

Wheeler (4-3) suffered the loss in the circle for the Roadrunners in 2.2 innings of work as she let up four hits and two runs. Monaco and Messina led the team at the plate each finishing 2-3.

Nicole Smith (2-3) earned the win in the circle for Stockton in relief. She worked the final 3.2 innings while surrendering five hits and two runs (none earned).
