Newburgh, NY: The Ramapo College softball team earned a double header sweep over Mount Saint Mary College (NY) today in non-conference action. The Roadrunners won the first game 12-3, a six inning run rule while they took game two 4-3 as the game was called due to darkness following six full innings of play. The Roadrunners improve to 13-3 overall while the Knights now stand at 4-8 overall.
Game 1
Ramapo put two runs up on the board in the third inning when
Nicole Cerasi scored on an RBI groundout from
Katie Rygiel before
Alexis Corra lifted a sac fly to play
Jaclyn Monaco, 2-0. In the fourth,
Avery Kontura belted her second home run of the year, a two-run home run over the left field fence as
Avery Bartolomeo scored, 4-0. Rygiel made it 5-0 with an RBI single to plate
Marissa DiPaolo.
MSMC got one run back in the fourth before Ramapo added two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth for a 12-1 lead. The sixth inning was highlighted by
Kori Gargiulo's bases clearing double as Ramapo took a 11-1 lead before Monaco drove home Gargiulo with an RBI single for the Roadrunners final run of the game. The Knights added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while the Roadrunners took the run-rule game, 12-3.
DiPaolo (4-0) struck out two, walked none, let up one run and scattered four runs in four innings of work.
Mahogany Wheeler pitched 1.2 innings where she struck out two, walked two and let up two hits and two runs scored.
Brooke Knight came in for relief in the sixth and let up one hit and struck out one.
Ramapo collected 15 hits in the game as Bartolomeo and Kontura each finished with three hits and three runs scored. Rygiel, Gariulo and Cerasi each collected two hits while Gargiulo led the way with three RBI.
Game 2
MSMC took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Ramapo tied the game in the second and took the lead in the third scoring one run in each inning, 2-1. After the Roadrunners held the Knights scoreless in the bottom of the third, they scored two runs in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 lead.
Down 1-0 entering the top of the second, Kontura led off with a double before moving to second on a sac bunt from
Alex Hastings. Following the second out of the inning,
Nicole Cerasi drove in Kontura to tie the game with an RBI single up the middle, 1-1. Kontura drove home Wheeler with an RBI single down the right field line to take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Monaco put down a bunt single before stealing second base and later scored on an infield throwing error by the Knights, 3-1. Corra then lifted a sac fly to center field to plate Rygiel, who reached on the previous error and was able advance to third base on the play. In the bottom of the fourth, MSMC scored one run before they added another run in the bottom of the sixth to come within one of tying the game. The game was then called due to darkness following six full innings of play.
Kassy Stefanksi (4-2) earned the win in the circle for the Roadrunners with four strikeouts and two walks. She surrendered nine hits and three runs (two earned) in five innings of work.
Brooke Knight worked the sixth to earn her second save of the season while she did not give up a hit and induced three groundouts to end the inning. Wheeler, Kontura, Cerasi and Monaco all collected two hits in the game as Ramapo recorded ten hits.
Ramapo returns to action on Thursday, March 23rd when they host Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference double header starting at 3pm.
