Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team held off a late comeback by Rowan University today for a 78-72 win. The Roadrunners improve to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC while the Profs now stand at 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Ramapo opened up a big lead in the first quarter taking a 21-12 lead into the second while they outscored the Profs 17-11 to take a 38-23 lead into halftime. The Profs edged Ramapo in the next two quarters but Ramapo was able to hold off Rowan to earn the NJAC victory down the stretch.
Jada Thompson led the Roadrunners on the court scoring in double figures for the fifth straight game and earning a double-double for the third straight. Thompson posted 21 points and 11 rebounds while adding two assists and one blocked shot.
Shannon Burns posted 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Olivia Johnstone added 12 points including three made three-pointers. In the fourth quarter, Rowan cut the lead to just three before Johnstone sank a three-pointer to give the Roadrunners back a seven point lead with just over six minutes to play.
Kellie Martinez recorded a season high 12 points,
Karly Wittenbauer contributed with nine points while
Reilly Sheeley added eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. Ramapo forced 19 Prof turnovers which led to 19 points for the Roadrunners. Ramapo also connected on 14 second chance points and 22 points in the pain. The team shot 42% (26-61) from the floor, 55% (5-9) from the field and 65% (21-32) from the free throw line.
Rowan was led by Savanna Holt who tallied 18 points while Nicole Mallard, Kate Herlihy and Eliana Santana each contributed with 11 points. Kristina Johnson led the way with eight rebounds. The Profs shot 41% (23-56) from the floor, 35% (6-17) from the three-point line and 80% (20-25) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners host Montclair State University (5-5/3-2 NJAC) on Wednesday, December 13th in a 5:30pm NJAC conference game.
