Olivia Johnstone drained a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated NJAC rival Montclair State University, 58-57. The Roadrunners, who won their third straight, moved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks now stand at 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
In a tight game where there were seven lead changes it all came down to the last five seconds of the game. In the fourth, Montclair State took a two point lead with five seconds on the clock when Megan Duffy got away from the Roadrunner defense and scored a layup, 57-55. Ramapo would call a timeout to advance the basketball which set up the iconic shot from Johnstone. Johnstone's buzzer beater was her fourth made three of the game where she finished with 12 points.
Jada Thompson added a team high 19 points while
Karly Wittenbauer added a career high 15 points and nine rebounds.
Shannon Burns added nine rebounds including five offensive while adding five points. Ramapo shot 31% (22-70) from the floor, 25% (4-16) from the three-point line and 71% (10-14) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners recorded 24 points in the paint and 22 points off MSU turnovers.
For the Red Hawks, Shannon Hughes led the team with 18 points including six three-pointers. Duffy added 13 points and four rebounds while Isabella Orlando added ten points. Olivia Vero led the way with 11 rebounds while adding five points. MSU shot 30% (19-62) from the field, 36% (13-36) from the three-point line and 75% (6-8) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sunday, December 30th when they host Washington College (MD) in non-conference action at 1:00 PM.
