Mahwah, NJ: The #21 Rowan University softball team swept a pair of NJAC games from Ramapo College this afternoon. The Profs (28-8, 13-3 NJAC) took game one, 4-0, while they came back to win game two, 6-3.
Game One
Rowan broke through the scoreless game in the top of the sixth inning with three runs on five hits. Three straight singles for the Profs loaded the bases before Korie Hauge singled to center field to plate the first run of the game. Caitlin Thomas then singled back to the pitcher to plate the second run while Gianna LaMorges plated the third run with a sac fly, 3-0. Rowan added the final run in the seventh inning when Liz McCaffery lined a double into the right-center field gap to plate Mackenzie Melvin for the 4-0 score.
Emily August (14-4) earned the win in the circle for the Profs as she limited the Roadrunners to just three hits. August struck out eight and walked just one.
Mahogany Wheeler (9-6) took the loss for Ramapo in the circle as she struck out three, walked none and let up 11 hits in the complete game.
Game Two
Rowan took a quick lead in the top of the first inning as Zane connected on a two-run home run. In the second inning, the Profs added one run as Melvin plated Shukaitis with an RBI double, 3-0.
Ramapo tied the game in the third inning.
Krista Verrino led off with a double before
Alexis Corra laced a single to center field which allowed Verrino to score. Wheeler walked to put runners on first and second before
Katie Rygiel poked an RBI single up the middle, 2-3. Rygiel later moved to third on a wild pitch before
Marissa DiPaolo and
Nicole Cerasi worked back-to-back walks to force home Rygiel to tie the game, 3-3.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Rowan would plate three runs on four hits. Melvin beat out an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on MacNair's single to right field. Zane plated the second run with a double to left-center field before McCaffery plated the sixth run for Rowan on a single to center field, 6-3. Ramapo would load the bases in the sixth inning before the Profs ended the threat with a strikeout to end the inning. The Roadrunners put the leadoff runner on base in the seventh but the Prof defense would hold Ramapo scoreless and earn the game two victory.
August (15-5) earned the win in relief for the Profs. She struck out two, walked one and scattered four hits in the final 4.1 innings of work.
DiPaolo (11-2) took the loss in the circle for Ramapo. She struck out seven, walked four and scattered ten hits. Verrino, Egan, Corrra and Rygiel each collected two hits each in the game.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 30th when they host the College of New Jersey in the final NJAC regular season conference game of the year beginning at 1pm.
