RAMAPO SWEEPS JOHN JAY TO EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 10

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team extended their win streak to ten games with a non-conference sweep over John Jay College (11-19) today. The Roadrunners (23-6) won both games in five innings with scores of 11-0 and 11-3.
 
Game One
Ramapo starting pitcher Mahogany Wheeler and reliever Megan Giesecke combined to fire a no-hitter for the Roadrunners. Wheeler started the game and went to complete innings with one strikeout and one walk before Giesecke (1-0) worked the final three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
 
The Roadrunners scored five runs in the first inning. Jaclyn Monaco led off the inning with a bunt single before she stole second and third. Carli Egan then drove her home with an RBI single. Later in the inning with Egan on third and Alexis Corra on second, Katie Rygiel drove them home with a hard hit single to center field for a 3-0 lead. Rygiel would end up at third base on the play as the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Avery Bartolomeo then connected on her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left-center field fence to extend the lead, 5-0.
 
In the second inning, Ramapo added five more runs highlighted by RBI singles from Corra, Rygiel and a two RBI double from Anna Messina. In the fourth inning, Wheeler connected on her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence for an 11-0 score.
 
The Roadrunners collected 12 hits in the game as Rygiel finished 3-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
 
Game Two
Ramapo scored eight runs in the first inning for a quick lead in game two. Wheeler gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run as Monaco and Corra scored. Melody Gleason drove in two with a hard hit single down the left field line, 5-0, before two more runs came home on an infield error. The final run of the inning came home as Corra recorded an RBI double which allowed Monaco to score, 8-0.
 
John Jay scored one run in the second while they added two runs in the third, 3-8. Ramapo tacked on three runs in the third inning to extend the lead, 11-3. With two outs, Krista Verrino walked before Grace Jensen and Wheeler hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Rygiel then ripped a single up the middle to plate two runs before Wheeler scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Roadrunners held the Bloodhounds in the final two innings for the 11-3 run-rule victory. Sara Cappetti (2-0) earned the win in the circle for Ramapo as she struck out two, walked two and scattered five hits in three innings of work. Giesecke once again came into the game for relief and did not let up a hit in two innings of work while she struck out one. Wheeler was 2-2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
 
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Rowan University in a key NJAC double header at the Athletic Center starting at 3pm.
