Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a pair of non-conference games from Mount Saint Mary College (NY) this afternoon at the Athletic Center. The Roadrunners move to 8-3 overall while the Knights now stand at 1-8 on the year.
Game One
Ramapo scored their first run in the second inning when
Mahogany Wheeler and
Marissa DiPaolo each scored on wild pitches for a 2-0 lead. They would make it 3-0 in the third inning when
Katie Rygiel laced a single up the middle which allowed
Alexis Corra to score. In the fourth inning,
Jaclyn Monaco poked a single through the infield as
Avery Bartolomeo scored before
Nicole Cerasi later scored on a fielding error from the Knights, 6-0.
In the fifth, Alicia Killen drove home Sophia Reed with a single to get on the board. Wheeler, Ramapo's starting pitcher, and the defense held the Knights the rest of the way for a 6-1 win.
Ramapo had seven hits in the game while Wheeler led the way with two. She earned her fourth win in the circle and stands at 4-2 overall. She struck out three, walked one and scattered seven hits in the complete game victory.
Game Two
Ramapo scored first in game two in the bottom of the first when
Anna Messina scored on a wild pitch, 1-0. MSMC tied the game in the top of the third for a 1-1 score while neither team would push a run across in regulation, sending the game into extra innings. MSMC started the top of the eighth with a runner on second, before Rygiel made a huge defensive play at third base on an attempted bunt from the Knights. Rygiel dove into foul territory and made the catch for the first out of the inning before starting pitcher
Marissa DiPaolo induced two pop outs to end the threat.
In the bottom of the eighth, Monaco started on second base for the Roadrunners as Messina led off the inning at bat. Monaco stole third on the first pitch of the inning and was able to score on the play when the thrown ball sailed into left field for the 2-1 walk-off win. Ramapo collected eight hits in the game while
Carli Egan and Monaco each collected two. DiPaolo (3-1) went the distance in the circle as she struck out two, walked three and let up just five hits in eight innings of work.
Ramapo returns to action on Thursday, March 24th when they travel to Stevens University for a non-conference doubleheader at 3pm.
