Box Score 2 Union, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team fell to NJAC rival #24 Kean University today on the road. The Cougars took the regular season games, 1-0 in game one and 9-2 in game two. The Roadrunners finish the 2014 season, 18-17 overall, 8-10 in the NJAC.
With the sweep the Cougars (29-9 overall, 14-4 NJAC) earn the #4 seed in the upcoming NJAC Softball Tournament. Kean will travel to #3 Rowan University on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the double elimination tournament.
Courtney Yard (17-6) led the Cougars in the circle in both games. She started game one, firing a 1-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks while coming in relief in game two; where she struck out five, walked two and surrendered just two hits in the win.
In game one, Kean scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Tiffany Varriello led off with a double. Following two outs, Jill Martin laced a first pitch double to right-center, plating Variello with the eventual game winning run.
Yard and the Kean defense would keep Ramapo off the board to earn the shutout victory, 1-0.
Ramapo hurler,
Nicole Schneider (9-6) scattered seven hits in the complete game. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
In game two, Kean led, 5-0, after three innings of play. They added one run in the fourth to take a, 6-0 lead before Ramapo got on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
Melissa Moreno led off with a single down the left field line before being lifted for pinch runner
Brianna Dziedzic. Following one out, Dziedzic moved up one base on an infield error before later scoring on a throwing error later in the inning.
Kim LaPenta lifted a sac fly to left field, plating
Taylor May, who reached on an error earlier in the inning, 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars scored three runs to extend their lead, 9-2. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back RBI hits from Amanda Berezny and Martin.
Schneider (9-7) started on the mound for the Roadrunners in game two, surrendering 15 hits in the loss.
Melanie Walling collected two hits for the Roadrunners while
Caitlin Smith and Moreno each recorded one.
