Box Score Jersey City, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University on the road, 53-47, in a NJAC conference game. The Roadrunners improve to 9-8 overall, 6-4 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights fall to 5-12 overall, 2-8 in the conference.
NJCU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half before the Roadrunners got on the board with a three pointer from junior
Kelly Haspel to cut the lead to one, 3-4 (16:23). NJCU went on a 9-3 run to take a 13-6 lead (11:05). Ramapo went on a mini 5-0 run of their own cutting the NJCU lead to two, 11-13 (8:49). The two teams traded baskets before Ramapo tied the game at 15 all with a basket from rookie
Bintou Berete as she got a pass from senior
Alayna Donadio with just under five minutes to play in the half. The basket by Berete started an 11-0 run which included three straight three pointers, capped off by senior
Anna Fucci's three with 1:10 to go to take a nine point lead, 24-15. The Gothic Knights would score the final basket of the half, a jumper from Bria Smith with one second on the clock as Ramapo headed into the locker room up seven, 24-17.
In the second half, Ramapo opened up an 11 point, 32-21 (14:52) with a jumper from junior
Jackie Jerkovich. After a NJCU basket Ramapo went on a 6-0 run to take a 15 point lead, 36-21 (13:13), capped off by two made free throws from junior Kerri Kosakowski. NJCU cut the lead to ten, 27-37, with a 6-0 run of their own before Ramapo went up 14, 41-27 (8:29) on a layup from senior
Micaela Moore. The Gothic Knights cut the lead to seven, 35-42 (6:20) on a made three from Jade Medley before Fucci connected on three straight free throws after she was fouled attempting a three point shot. Fucci's free throws and a layup from Bintou put the Roadrunners ahead by 12, 47-35, with just under five minutes to play. NJCU scored a quick five points, cutting the lead to seven, 42-49, (1:58) before Moore was able to score a layup and later a back end of a two shot foul for a ten point lead, 52-42, with 31 seconds remaining. NJCU would score five points down the stretch to Ramapo's one as the Roadrunners came away with a 53-47 NJAC road victory.
Jerkovich led the Roadrunners with 11 points, including two three pointers while Moore added ten points and six rebounds of her own. Haspel scored nine points and three steals while Kosakowski was perfect on the day scoring six points, 1-1 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. She also grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Fucci and Berete each collected six points in the game. Ramapo shot 35% (15-42) from the field, 36% (4-11) from beyond the three point line and 63% (19-30) from the free throw line.
For NJCU, Bria Smith led the team with a double-double, 18 points and 15 rebounds while Ashley Vazquez tallied 12 points and seven boards along with five steals. The Gothic Knights shot 27% (20-73) from the field, 21% (4-19) from beyond the three point line and 37% (3-8) from the foul line.
The Roadrunners return to action this Saturday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden University for a 1pm NJAC conference game.
