Box Score Newark, NJ: The #4 Rutgers-Newark University women's basketball team defeated #5 Ramapo College tonight, 60-42, at the Golden Dome Arena in the first round of the 2013 NJAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Scarlet Raiders (18-8) advance to take on #1 Montclair State University (25-0) on Wednesday, February 20th in Little Falls at 7:00pm. The Roadrunners (17-8) will wait to hear of a possible bid to the 2013 ECAC Metro Basketball Tournament to be announced on February 25th.
Ramapo got on the board right away in the first half, 2-0, with a jumper from senior
Faith Flannery off a dish from sophomore
Kelly Haspel with 19:36 on the clock. The Scarlet Raiders would go on a mini 5-0 run to go up 5-3 (18:00) before a made foul shot and jumper from Flannery tied the game at five (16:31). A made three pointer from Haspel and a jumper from Flannery put the Roadrunners up three, 10-7 with 15:13 on the clock before Rutgers-Newark took a 11-10 lead with a pair of foul shots from Jasmine Daniels (13:39). Alayna Donadio hit a deep three for Ramapo for a two point lead, 13-11 (12:50) before the Scarlet Raiders hit back to back shots to take the lead, 15-13 (10:53). Sophomore
Kerrie Kosakowski nailed two foul shots for Ramapo, to tie the game for the fourth time at 15 all with 10:37 left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets before Rutgers-Newark hit back to back shots and Sharee Gordon sank the front end of a two shot foul to take a four point lead, 23-19 (6:28). Flannery found Donadio beyond the three point line as she hit her second three of the half to shrink the lead to one, 22-23 with 6:12 on the clock. Kosakowski and sophomore
Alex Milne each nailed both of their foul shots late in the half to take a four point lead with 2:47 on the clock, 27-25. Palmer made a basket for Rutgers-Newark to tie the game at 27; before Howard made the second shot of a two shot foul to lead Ramapo, 28-27 with 1:14 left in the first half.
Flannery led the Roadrunners in the first half with seven points while Milne added five of her own. Junior
Micaela Moore grabbed a team high eight rebounds and three blocks. Ramapo shot 32% (8-25) from the field and 80% (8-10) from the foul line. Ramapo out rebounded Rutgers-Newark, 25-19, in the half.
For the Scarlet Raiders; Palmer, Daniels and Simmons each posted six points in the first half while the team shot 30% (10-33) from the field and 53% (7-13) from the foul line.
The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to an eight point lead in the second half, 36-28 (16:16), as they went on an 8-1. The two teams traded shots as the Scarlet Raiders held a ten point lead, 42-32 (14:25) before junior
Anna Fucci drained a three pointer for the Roadrunners to shrink the lead to seven, 42-35, (14:03). Rutgers-Newark led 44-37, before they went on a 10-0 run capped off by a three pointer from Laura Shakiri to take a 54-37 lead. Rutgers-Newark scored six more points before rookie
Larissa Forese made one of her fouls shots, 60-38 (1:59), to snap the Ramapo scoring drought. The Roadrunners previous basket came with 10:27 to go in the game. Sophomore
Tierney Henderson and Forese each made their foul shots in the final seconds of the game to close the gap, 60-42, as the Scarlet Raiders came away with the NJAC tournament victory.
Flannery led the Roadrunners with nine points while Milne added seven points of her own. Moore grabbed a team high 12 rebounds while Donadio grabbed ten of her own. The Roadrunners shot 23% (12-52) in the game and 70% (14-20) from the foul line.
Daniels led the Scarlet Raiders with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Palmer and Marshall each netted ten points a piece. Rutgers-Newark shot 41% (23-55) from the field and 63% (12-19) from the foul line, including 60% (13-22) from the field in the second half.
