TCNJ & RAMAPO SPLIT IN NJAC SOFTBALL ACTION

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Ewing, NJ:  The standings for softball in the New Jersey Athletic Conference started on Saturday with the second through sixth seeds still waiting to be determined.

When the dust settled on the final day of the regular season, The College of New Jersey used a split with Ramapo College to finish in a three-way tie for second.

The visiting Roadrunners won the opening game 8-6, but the Lions bounced back to claim a 10-2 victory in five innings to get the split.

Montclair State entered the weekend already having the top seed locked up, finish with a 15-3 conference record, while TCNJ, Rowan, and William Paterson each went 12-6. The Lions were awarded the second seed via a 3-1 record against the teams they were tied with and will host fifth-seeded Kean University on Tuesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. Ramapo, which finished 10-8 in conference play, is seeded sixth and will play at Montclair on Tuesday at 4pm.

Following Tuesday's games, remainder of the NJAC Tournament will then resume on Friday at Montclair State.

The game also was the final regular-season home game for four seniors, who were recognized in a special ceremony highlighting their accomplishments. That group included Katelyn Congilose (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), Michelle Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXII), and Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls).

Game 1
Ramapo College 8, TCNJ 6
The Roadrunners came back from a one-run deficit with three runs in the fourth and another in the sixth as they posted a win in the opener.

In the top of the fourth, Amanda Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXII) hit a sacrifice fly to plate and run to tie the game at 5-5, while the Roadrunners regained the lead when Kim LaPenta (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) scored on an error. Ramapo added one more run in the inning as Caitlin Smith (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) singled home a run making it a 7-5 game.

TCNJ came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a single Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), which brought home Lee making it a one-run difference.

The Roadrunners then added an insurance run in the sixth when LaPenta hit an RBI double.

The teams traded runs in the first, but the visitors scored made it 3-1 in the second on a two-run home run by Kelsey Higgins (Wall, NJ/Wall) and added another run in the third when Danielle Rothenberger (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) plated a run with a double.

The Lions grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third scoring four times in the inning. Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) got things going for the hosts driving in Lee with a base hit, while Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) produced another run with a ground out to the right side. TCNJ tied the game one batter later on a single by Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), who came around to score on a hit by Congilose. That run put TCNJ in front 5-4.

Lee and Sogluizzo each had two hits for TCNJ, while Lee also scored three times and stole four bases.

Higgins paced the Roadrunners as she was 2-for-2 at the plate, while scoring three times and driving in two others.

Roadrunner pitcher Lauren Shaw (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) picked up her 16th win of the season.

Sophomore Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) pitched well for the Lions despite the suffering the loss. She allowed seven hits and struck out eight, and three of the runs that scored were unearned.

Game 2
TCNJ 10, Ramapo College 2 (5 innings)
The Lions got off to a great start using a seven-run second inning to race out to the lead. Huttner scored the first run of the inning on a double by Hommen to make it 1-0 and that lead doubled when Lindsey Williams (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) had a RBI single. Casale and Sogluizzo then each had two-run singles with the final run of the inning coming as Sogluizzo touched the plate following a Roadrunner error.

Ramapo cut into that deficit with the long ball in the third when clean-up batter Taylor Boffalo (Paramus, NJ//Paramus) hit a two-run homer to center.

It only took a half inning for the Lions to get those two runs back as Casale came up with another clutch hit driving a two-run double into the gap in left field. Those runs put the difference at 9-2.

The Lions added a final run in the fifth as Corrine Minicozzi (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) singled and scored on a ground out by Lee.

Carisone took the mound again for TCNJ and tossed a complete game for her eighth win of the season.

Casale drove in four runs in the game, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
