HIGGINS, SHAW LEAD RAMAPO AT NTC SPRING GAMES

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Claremont, FL:  The Ramapo College softball team picked up two wins tonight at the National Training Center Spring games. The Roadrunners (6-0) shutout Babson University, 6-0 while they won in eight innings against Wellseley College, 6-5.

In game one against Babson, Lisa Orlando singled home Kelsey Higgins from second base with a single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Ramapo broke open the game in the top of the seventh inning when they scored five runs on four hits. With the bases loaded, Caitlin Smith knocked home Krystal Kmiechick with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field before Higgings singled home Jacyln Lima. Orlando once again came up with a big hit when she hit a bases loaded triple to right centerfield, clearing the bases and picking up three RBI as Ramapo took a 6-0 lead.

Lauren Shaw went the distance in the complete game shutout, as she struck out eight and walked one while scattering six hits. Higgins went 4-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Lima was 3-4 with one run scored.

In game two, Ramapo took a 4-1 lead after two innings of play. Wellseley got on the board in the top of the first inning before Ramapo came back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Lima led off the inning with a bunt single then stole second base before Tiffany Fischer ripped a double to straight away centerfield, scoring Lima. Fischer later came home on an error by Wellseley as Danielle Rothenberger's fly ball was misplayed.

In the second inning, Ramapo scored two more runs to take the 4-1 lead on two hits as Fischer slammed her second double of the game plating Lima and Kristen Wilson. Wilson led off the inning with a walk while Lima punched a single through the left side of the infield. Wellseley added one run in the third inning to shrink the Ramapo lead, 4-2 before the Roadrunners tacked on one run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-2. Kmiechick singled down the left field line before being moved to second on Fischer's walk. Rothenberger then drilled a single up the middle as Kmiechick was able to cross home plate.

In the seventh, Wellseley was able to tie the game with three runs on two hits and two Ramapo errors which extended the inning. In the top of the eight inning, Wellseley began with a runner starting on second base because of the tie-breaker rule. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third base but relief pitcher Shaw was able to get to strike outs to end the threat. In the bottom of the eighth, pinch runner Amanda Kent would start on second for Ramapo. Pinch hitter Melanie Eskin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her up a base before she would score on a wild pitch during Fischer's at bat for the game winning run, 6-5.

Ramapo's Harley Masiello earned the no-decision as she went 6.1 innings and scattered six hits and struck out two. Shaw earned the wink, working the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they take on Kalamazoo at 1:00PM and #25 University of St. Thomas at 3:00PM.
