RAMAPO SWEEPS ROWAN IN NJAC ACTION, 6-5 IN EIGHT INNINGS & 4-1

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a NJAC doubleheader today against Rowan University, 6-5 in eight innings and 4-1 in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 17-3 overall, 4-2 in the NJAC while the Profs fall to 16-7, 2-2 in the conference.

In game one, Rowan got on the board first, with one unearned run in the second inning, 1-0. Ramapo came back with a run to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Janet Brown singled to right field to lead off the inning before moving to second when Lisa Orlando drew a walk. Kelsey Higgins dripped a two-out double to left field to plate Brown to tie the game. Ramapo took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Danielle Rothenberger drilled a two-run home run over the centerfield fence as Tiffany Fisher scored, she walked earlier in the inning.

Sam Stevens led off the fourth inning with a home run for Rowan before Casey Roselle doubled home Nicolina Veneziano to tie the game at three. The Roadrunners would again take the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Fischer walked with the bases loaded and Ashley Schirripa scored. Schirripa ripped a double to right field earlier in the inning to reach base. Rothenberger then drove in Higgins with a hard hit ground ball to shortstop which was misplayed allowed all runners to advance before Rowan induced a strikeout to end the threat.

Rowan came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning with two runs on three hits. Stevens hit a two-RBI double to right field, plating Roselle and Ashley Minch. In the Rowan half of the eight inning, Julie Leskanic was placed on second base before the Roadrunners recorded the first out of the inning, a pop up to the catcher, she advanced to third on an ground out to shortstop before Ramapo starter Deanna Giordano got out of the jam with a foul out left field. In the bottom half of the eighth, Fischer was placed on second before Ramapo loaded the bases with no outs on a hit by pitch and single. Stephanie Malgeri then ripped a hard hit ground ball to third base as Fischer raced home. The Profs third baseman stepped on the bag at third base for the first out before her throw home got away allowing Fischer to slide home safely with the winning run, 6-5.

Giordano (7-2) struck out eight and walked only one in the complete game win. Brown finished the game 3-5 with one run scored while Rothenberger was 2-4 with one run scored and three RBI. Higgins was 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

For the Profs, Amanda Singer took the loss as she fell to 10-3, she struck out ten Roadrunners while walking eight over 7.1 innings of work.

In game two, Ramapo hitting as the away team, got on the board in the top of the third inning. Rothenberger ripped a two-run home run over the left field score board to take a 2-0 lead, Fischer scored as she singled to shortstop to lead off the inning. In the fourth inning Krystal Kmiechick led off with a double to right field before she moved to third on Amanda Ken's sacrifice bunt. With two outs Rothenberger hit a hard single to right field to plate Kmiechick, 3-0.

The Roadrunners added their final run in the fifth inning when pinch runner Erin Brady scored from third base on Schirripa's single past second base for a 4-0 lead. Rowan got one run back in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Jenny Arcella ripped a two-out double to right field, plating Roselle who reached on a fielder's choice, 4-1. Rowan would not go down quietly as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the seventh inning before Ramapo recorded the final out on a deep pop fly to center field to end the game.

Lyndsay Buehler (8-1) struck out two in the complete game win, she scattered five hits. Rothenberger, Malgeri, Schirripa and Kmiechick all collected multiple hits for the Roadrunners.

Jamie Minix suffered the loss for the Profs, she struck out four over five innings of work.

The Roadrunners return to action when they host NJAC rival Kean University on Tuesday, April 12th at 3:00pm. Rowan will host NJAC foe Richard Stockton College tomorrow at Noon.
