Kissimmee, FL: The Ramapo College softball team wrapped up the 2010 Rebel Spring Games with a two game sweep over Nazareth College, 1-0 and University of Wisconsin River Falls, 2-1 in eight innings. The Roadrunners improve to 7-5 on the season.
Behind the stellar pitching by junior
Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ), Ramapo came away with a 1-0 victory. Giordano surrendered only two hits while striking out 12 and allowed no walks as she improved to 3-2 on the year. Junior
Jaclyn Giangrande (Belleville, NJ) ripped a double to left field before rookie
Kelsey Higgins (Wall, NJ) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Giangrande to third. Golden Flyer pitcher Kelly Kocher was then charged with an illegal pitch which allowed Giangrande to score from third base for the game's only run. Kocher only allowed four hits and struck out 13 in the loss.
Rothenberger and Higgins were each 1-1 while rookie
Stephanie Jones (Robbinsville, NJ) and Giangrande were 1-3 in the game.
In game two, the Roadrunners scratched out a late run in the top of the eighth inning and held the Falcons in the bottom of the inning as they tried to rally with two outs for the 2-1 win.
Ramapo got on the board with the game's first run in the top of the first inning. With two outs sophomore
Danielle Rothenberger (Livingston, NJ) reached base on an infield error before junior
Stephanie Malgeri (Montville, NJ) singled down the right field line allowing Rothenberger to advance to third and she scored as the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
The Falcons tied the game in the third inning with an unearned run. The game would remain scoreless until the eighth innings. Using the international tie-breaker rule, junior
Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ) would start the inning on second base. Junior
Brittney McKeon (Toms River, NJ) sacrificed her to third with a well placed bunt before rookie
Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, NY) hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Wong to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, with one out the Falcons threatened to score as runners were advanced to second and third after a ball was misplayed in the outfield. After a foul out to first base, junior pitcher
Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ) recorded the final out of the game on a strikeout to end the threat.
Buehler picked up her fourth win of the year as she struck out ten and walked two. Malgeri was 2-2 while senior
Katie Donnelly (North Haledon, NJ) and sophomore
Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) each recorded a hit in the game.
The Roadrunners will return to action on March 24th when they travel to non-conference foe the College of Staten Island at 3:00 PM.
