Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team played host to theValiants of Manhattanville College tonight in a non-conference match-up posting a 62-55 victory. The Roadrunners remain undefeated at 5-0 while the Valiants drop to 2-3.
Sophomore
Alexa Ryan tallied a team high 26 points while dishing out four assists. Sophomore
Faith Flannery added 13 points of her own while grabbing a team high five steals, she also added three assists and three blocks. Senior
Danielle Beam grabbed a team high 11 rebounds while adding eight points and junior
Lindsey Gripenburg contributed 11 points and two steals.
The two teams traded baskets at the start of the game until an 8-8 tie when Manhattanville strung together four points to take a 12-8 lead with a free throw from Jennifer Mcsharar and a three-point basket from Janetta Arnold. Ryan took a pass Hoffman and cut the lead in half, before the Valiants sunk a two-point shot of their own to gain a 14-10 lead. Ryan struck again with her first three-point goal of the game to come within one and Taylor Wilson responded with a shot from behind the arc to give the Valiants a four point advantage, 17-13 with 10:15 to play. Ryan and Beam hit back-to-back baskets to tie the game for the fifth time, 17-17. Ryan netted five consecutive points for the Roadrunners to take a 22-17 lead, before Kelli Hyjek and Kaitlin Degnan put away back-to-back baskets to come within one, (22-21) forcing a Ramapo timeout with just over six minutes to play in the half. Ramapo spent the remainder of the half climbing to a six point, 32-26 halftime lead. The Roadrunners forced eight Valiant turnovers in the final minutes of the play to gain the advantage.
The Roadrunners combined shooting 14-31 (45%) in the half, behind 14 points from Ryan who shot 6-14 from the field. Flannery added nine points and Beam pulled down a team high four rebounds. TheValiants went 10-22 from the field hitting 46% of their shots. Wilson led the way with nine points and Hyjek pulled down four rebounds leading her team.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a seven point lead in the second half when Flannery made a basket at 19:37, she was assisted by rookie
Samantha Maggio. The Valiants went on a 6-0 run to take a 47-44 lead at 11:06 on Courtney Turner's lay up. The Roadrunners cut the lead to one with 8:44 to go in the game as Beam converted on both of her foul shots. Gripenburg tallied a jumper on an assist by Ryan to take a one point lead (50-49) and the Roadrunners never looked back. They stretched the lead to six with 2:56 remaining before the Valiants made a three pointer to cut the lead to three at 2:37. The two teams traded baskets before Ryan made a foul shot with 54 seconds remaining to take a six point lead (60-54) before Manhattanville made one foul shot and Ryan tallied the final two foul shots of the game with 16 seconds remaining for a 62-55 win.
The Roadrunners shot 46% from the field (23-50) in the game and 60% from the foul line (12-20). The Valiants shot 36% from the field (22-60) in the game while they shot 50% from the foul line (7-14).
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 4th when they open the 2010-2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference season facing off with the Profs of Rowan University at 1pm at the Bradley Center. Manhattanville will take on DeSales on Wednesday evening at home, tip-off at 6pm.
