FLANNERY NETS 23 POINTS LEADING RAMAPO TO VICTORY OVER PANTHERS

Mahwah, NJ: Sophomore Faith Flannery was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2010-2011 Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament as she led Ramapo to a 76-72 victory over the Panthers of Old Westbury in the championship game today at the Bradley Center. With the win, the Lady Roadrunners improved to 3-0 overall, Old Westbury falls to 1-1.

Flannery finished the night with 23 points shooting 6-12 from the field and 11-18 from the free throw line. She dished out five assists and grabbed two steals while pulling down six rebounds on the night. Lindsey Gripenburg chipped in 17 points to the win and Alexa Ryan and Danielle Beam added 11 and ten respectively. Beam posted her second double-double of the season adding ten points to the mix. The team shot 24-61 (39%) from the field while Old Westbury netted 26 field goals on 70 attempts shooting 37% in the loss. Kim Weathers led the Panthers with 29 points and three steals while Deslyn Applewhaite shot 7-18 from the field tallying 19 points and nine rebounds.

The two teams traded baskets at the start of the game before Applewhaite sparked a mini 5-0 run for the Panthers at 11:21 to put her team up by five, 19-14. Gripenburg responded hitting a jump shot and a three-point basket to tie the game for the second time, 19-19. For the next seven minutes, the teams again traded baskets until there was 2:32 on the clock, Ramapo's Alayna Donadio hit two free throws sparking another mini run to head into the locker room with a five point, 33-28 lead over the Panthers. The Roadrunners combine hitting 9-26 (35%) behind nine points each from Flannery and Gripenburg. Beam pulled down a team high 11 rebounds in the half. The Panthers went 11-32 (34%) with Weathers leading the way with 12 points. Applewhaite finished the half with seven points and five rebounds.

The Roadrunners spent the first five minutes of the second half working their way to a ten point advantage before the Panthers strung together five points to cut Ramapo's lead in half, 43-38. Old Westbury would come within three, 47-44, with a jumper from Applewhaite at 10:55, but the Roadrunners fought back gaining an 11 point advantage with just over five minutes to play when Gripenburg again hit a two-point basket, 65-54. The closest Old Westbury would come was four points at 1:42 with a three-point basket from Weathers, and again with three seconds to play when Weathers drained her sixth three-pointer of the game. Ramapo held on in the final seconds earning the 76-72 victory. Flannery controlled the offense for Ramapo in the second half sinking 14 points while Ryan and Gripenburg each chipped in eight points of their own. The team went 15-35 (43%) and Old Westbury shot 15-38 (39%). Weathers scored 17 second half points for the Panthers.

Consolation Game: In the first match-up of the day, the Nittany Lions of Penn-State Abington and the Cougars of Medgar Evers opened to a 4-4 tie before the Lions went on a 15-2 run to take a 19-6 lead with just under 11 minutes to play in the half. Samantha Frick sparked the run with a three-point goal at 16:18, and she capped it off with a just shot to give her team the 13 point advantage. The Nittany Lions continued to spread the gap with their biggest lead coming with just over a minute to go as Kim Breslin hit a two-point goal off a dish from Trish Watson. The team combined for 13 field goals in the half earning a 36-15 halftime advantage. Frick posted 13 points and Watson finished the half with ten. Chantal Biscette and Ranisha Venzen each posted four points for the Cougars. The team went 7-33 (21%) from the field.

Penn-State Abington held a lead in the 20's until the 10:02 minute mark when Nicole McClain sparked a 9-0 run to come within 17, 56-39. The Cougars fought to come within 16 but the Nittany Lions were too much for the Cougars posting a 67-50 victory in the consolation match-up. Brittany Middleton, Watson, and Frick contributed seven points each in the second half while the team combined for 13 field goals on 33 attempts shooting 39%. Medgar went 13-30 (43%) in the final half with Lewis leading the way with 12 points.

Frick finished the day with 20 points and ten rebounds while Elizabeth Hilbert grabbed a team leading 14 rebounds in the win. Watson netted 17 points and dished out eight assists. The team shot 36% hitting 26-73 from the field while the Cougars shot 32% with 20 field goals on 63 attempts. Lewis finished the day with 14 points for the Cougars.

The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, November 23rd when they travel to the College of Staten Island for a 5pm tip-off.
