Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team split a non-conference double header today against Moravian College, 4-3 in nine innings and 5-2 in game two. The Roadrunners now stand at 21-5 overall, while the Greyhounds stand at 21-5.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the first inning when senior
Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ) cracked a solo home run over the right field fence to take a 1-0 lead.
The Greyhounds answered back in the second inning when sophomore Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA) hit a double to center field and later came home on a pass ball, tying the game at 1-1.
After seven innings of play the game was tied at 1-1 and Ramapo and Moravian would use the international tie-breaking rule. In the eighth Olivia Evanko (Nazareth, PA) grounded out to third base, allowing Stephanie Falzarano (South Plainfield, NJ) to advance to third. Senior Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ) reached first base on a misplayed ball, allowing Falzarano to come home to give the Greyhounds a one run lead, 2-1.
Ramapo answered back in the bottom of the eighth to tie up the game at 2-2 when
Jaclyn Giangrande (Belleville, NJ) came home on
Rachel Wong's (Livingston, NJ) single to second base. Giangrande reached third when
Jamie Chalkley (West Milford, NJ) grounded out to the pitcher. Moravian would take a 3-2 lead when Carmon scored on a Ramapo error.
In the bottom of the ninth senior
Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ) hit a walk off homerun, knocking in Farmer, who started on second base, for a 4-3 victory.
Winning pitcher
Deanna Giordano (Clifton, NJ) recorded five strikeouts in the game, and surrendered three runs (none earned), raising her recored to 12-1 on the season.
For Moravian, senior Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA) took the loss falling to 11-6 for the year, she struck out six while walking one. DeBonis also recorded her 500th career strikeout, she needed five coming into the game and now stands at 501 in her career.
In game two, Head Coach John Byrne recorded his 500th career win as Moravian split the double header with a 5-2 victory.
Moravian would jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY) recorded a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Bieniek to score, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. In the third inning, Falzarano reached on a double before DeBonis picked up the RBI on a sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning on five hits and one Ramapo error to go up 5-0.
The Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the seventh when Schriber connected on her second home run of the day scoring rookie
Danielle Rothenberger (Livingston, NJ).
Rookie pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ) picked up her ninth win of the season as she struck out three and walked none over seven innings of work.
Sophomore pitcher
Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ) suffered the loss (8-4) she struck out two and walked one while giving up five runs and only one earned.
Rothenberger was the only Roadrunner to collect multiple hits as she went 2-3 with one run scored.
The Roadrunners return to action when they host NJAC rival the College of New Jersey on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
