MATOS SHINES IN 12-4 VICTORY OVER RAMAPO

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-4 decision today to the Chargers of Dominican College in their home opener at the Athletic Center in Mahwah. With five goals from Amanda Matos (Vernon, NY), the Chargers earned their first win of the 2008 season to improve to 1-3 on the year. The Roadrunners fall to 0-2 overall with the loss.

Under one minute into the game, Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) ripped a shot past the Ramapo goaltender off a pass from Jessica Bianchi (East Islip, NJ) to take a 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners. Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY) gave the Chargers a 2-0 edge and Matos put Dominican up three. Both goals were unassisted hitting the back of the cage with 13:30 and 11:51 to go in the half respectively. Chambers notched her second goal of the game just over one minute later with an assist from Jenifer Olin (Oceanside, NJ), before Matos made her mark again with a goal at 22:59 from Akkirah Cooper (Bronx, NY). The Chargers rounded out the first half of play with goals from Sara Kiernan (Saugerties, NY) and Chambers, both unassisted, to head into the intermission, 7-0 over Ramapo.

Ramapo struck quickly at the start of the second half when Eveline Rutledge (Plainsboro, NJ) hit the back of the cage, spoiling the shut out, with a goal 25 seconds in. Matos, Olin, and Karlsen each gave the Chargers a goal before Rutledge recorded back-to-back goals putting the Roadrunners within seven, 10-3. Matos posted her fourth of the game at 53:49 and Ramapo's Sarah Clayton (Howell, NJ) took a pass from Jenna Pfarr (Cranford, NJ) putting one in for Ramapo before Matos struck once again giving the Chargers a 12-4 victory with just one tick left on the clock.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) blocked 11 shots letting up all four of Ramapo goals while Diana Silva (Howell, NJ) and Megan Tierney (Wayne, NJ) split time in front of the cage, combining for 11 saves for Ramapo.

The Roadrunners return to action on Monday, March 31st when they host Manhattanville College at 4:30 PM.
